Sure - I will get my ruler out. Yes, it does relate back to that tree. I am not having a dig at you stubonsai - I just think the age of that tree has been misquoted. I think the tree is great - and probably value for money. I just dont believe that the tree is 27 years old. Like I said - not having a dig at you stu - or the tree - I like the tree.

Cheers,
Leigh.

Hi Leigh

No worries Leigh, no offence taken.
As a new bonsai person I'm very intereted in all the l can learn and the aspect of age guessing a tree based on its looks and development is an important tool when considering trees to purchase.
Would it be of help if I got some dimensions of my elm?
Thanks for the positive comment also!

cheers
Stuart

Just went and measured mine.

Here ya go - 900 high (incl. pot) 800 wide 600 deep - circumference of trunk is 700mm

I dont know how old mine is - but I took a guess - I have had it about 8 or 9 years - the guy before me might have had it about 6 or 7 years and by the size of the trunk I figured maybe 8 or so years in the ground after being grown from a cutting in a pot for a few years - the guy I bought it from bought it from a field grower. So - it might be around 25 to 27 years old.

Cheers,
Leigh.

Nice to see you post a tree that hasn't been stolen yet Leigh
How about a bigger picture?

so its about 222mm across the base (diameter) how wide across the base is yours stu?

i like both trees but i think that it would be quite possible stu's tree is 27 years old, even if it was ground grown for 8 years then developed in a pot for the rest of the time it could answer the reasoning behind looking slightly smaller?

leigh, just a thought.

have you thought about taking off the sharp apex and making it a little more rounded? i would think this would give it a more balanced feel and a more "natural" look.

just a thought :D

Great thinking mate! Skip and I had a discussion about this tree the night that this picture was taken - and that is exactly what we came up with! I will give it a tidy up in the coming weeks and take another picture - it has had a couple of years growth since this pic - I still havent reduced the top - but I havent ruled it out!

Cheers,
Leigh.

Yes - a very tidy shohin would come from the top of this one!!

cool mate :D

great minds think alike :D  :D ;)

i reckon the layer would be the way to go :D then if you were ever going to show the tree you could have the shohin as a companion accent :D the parent and the child ;)
