Japanese Black pine Air layer

Post by Pup »

G,day People I have just done a quick look though propagation threads for Air layering JBP's.

At a friends yesterday doing some mutual work on tree's ( picked up some more Hokkeido elm stock ) I was asked if I knew how successful air layering Japanese Black pines was.

When to do it and what method was best. Not being a JBP person I could not answer. So what I am doing now is asking.
I have read as has my friend what is available in varying books.

What I would like is from personal experience, like when you did it what medium was used was it the ring bark method or wire tourniquet.

Did you use a drip feed for the watering or the standard cling wrap with sphagnum moss.

I would be very grateful as the friend is one in a million, and if can help, with your help it would be wonderful.

Cheers looking forward to a lot of replys of successful air layers :) Pup

I did some and posted the results on here somehwere.

It was a youngish trunk that I layered
Used the Sphagnum moss and Peat in a pot after ringbarking. Put it on in Autumn and took it off late winter ( Early spring). Watered daily with all my other trees
all were very sucessful and are thriving

Hi Pup,

I have a JBP air layer on at the moment, I have yet to be successful, as my first attempt didn't work, but I think I know what the problem was anyways the layer has been redone and still waiting... :|
Here is a thread I found quite helpful on bonsainut.

Mine has finally taken El. after a second attempt also . Ya gotta make sure the ring bark is way wide enough and you also get every little scrap of cambium off. As both i and El have learnt. Would i do it again? Yes when i set up a stock tree that i have no intention of styling except for taking layers. Otherwise too much time wasted on the good tree. JMO :D 8-)
