The IBC has recently been having a most interesting and thought evoking discussion. And yes Walter is stirring the pot again, god love him!
The discussion has evolved into talk of Broom variations and younger looking trees. This particular discussion has inspired me immensely, so as you do, i hopped off to one of my favourite nurseries today. Collecter's Corner at Garden World. It's as if i could feel it in my gut!!! 12 high noon i entered the premises. Did my usual quick dash to take it all in and then nit pick. Except there wasn't much to nit pick. The place is undergoin major reno's and the bonsai section has temporarely been made smaller. At least i hope its temporary. No new stock since my last visit, well ok not much. Anyway back to nit picking! After a couple of laps and ignoring a line of big formal tridents,BANG! this one hit me. uuum not a sexy miyogi style, ahhhhh not a powerful formal upright. In fact there is something very different about this tree. So i picked it up, took it to a table where i could spin it around and poke at it. YES this is the tree to learn what has so deeply inspired me the last couple of days. Enough waffling and here it is.

Thankyou chris, price was $350 . Age??? not sure mate. At the widest point across the base it 's approx 150mm. Any growers out there can tell us how long it would take to field grow that. 7-8 yrs maybe for a tridey. Then some root work appears to have been done, extra time. The bark on the base looks like there is some age to it, so i reckon its been around a while since coming out of a field.

Thats the ticket Jezz! Hard to beat that front. I went to get some Diatamite in Cheltenham and thought whats an extra hour or two. Was well worth it!
Next is defoliate, clean and wire, maybe a little carving and burning too. Cant wait!

Well keep us posted on this guy. 2 seasons for a ripper tree I reckon.
Were there any more of similar stature at Collectors?
Cheers.

No mate but quite a few big Upright and Informal Upright power houses at very reasonable prices.

really nice score ant

350 is sweet for this tree, it's loaded with character.
its got nice features all round, but the deadwood in pic 1 makes me moist, ahh the possibilities...
i do think that those straight bits coming from the trunk is where the tree lacks in taper, if it were in my hands, i would consider either moving them or the chop.
nice tree, and price for what you will learn

Thanks Azz, I agree with all that you have said and considering my options very carefully. As for pic.1 keep ya pants on son, thats coming soon. A little termite here and a little borer there and then FIRE! I am very excited about the potential here.
