I recently acquired this multi trunk Cedar, it was hit by a fallen tree in the nursery & regrew in every direction except up. It is in an 18"pot, over 4' wide. I have reduced it to 7 trunks, removed the top 3" of soil & root & started the lifting process, i am not happy with the trunk placement at present but dont want to over work this baby. I plan to plant it in the garden and let it get some foliage back on it. Not sure if I should do this now or let it recover from the work done so far & plant out in spring. Any comments/ advice would be greatly appreciated.

Having seen the regrowth of one i put in the garden 18mths ago to today i am reasonably confident this one will rebound, hence i have taken it back to a bare skeleton. This tree arrived on my door unwatered for 6wks. It was cut back to where ever a live bud could be found. Approx 2ft tall it is absolutely pumping. It was left to its own devices last yr, this yr tip pruning has been every 3-4wks. Having just had its last for this yr. I dont want the plant to extend as much as just to fill up. I will look at digging this up next spring & back into its pot with a major overhaul at that time.

Re: Multi trunk Cedar
That is impressive regrowth. Is this one grafted? I note your other two are grown from seed. Many of the atlantica I see in Sydney appear to be grafted onto deodora rootstock. I think that is because atlantica don't handle wet summers well. Could that be why your others have yellowing of foilage?Having seen the regrowth of one i put in the garden 18mths ago

Re: Multi trunk Cedar
It is growing on its own roots. It was an overpriced undersized bonsai a friend bought, they went on holidays & the neighbour didnt water it at all. He was under the impression being a bonsai it needed no attention & would just live on fresh air. As well as the regrowth it has thickened considerably, still not enough to make it all fit. Will see what the roots are like next spring, it may call for another year in the ground to thicken some more. Only time can determine its future.pasquale wrote: Is this one grafted?

Re: Multi trunk Cedar
I have just finished watering the trees, had a good look at this one & it is already starting to pump up the buds all over, including more than a few on old wood. This in just 2wks, have decided to keep it in its pot till spring when it can replace my other one thats currently in the garden filling out.
