Casuarina Progress

Post by Hutch11 »

Gday,

About 8 weeks ago I had to remove a Casuarina which was in our back yard. It was a young tree which was going to take up too much space when it grew, so instead of chopping it down and throwing it out, I decided to put it into a bonsai pot and look after the little guy. As I was in a rush I did not place it in a grow box or leave it in the ground to recover.. I simply trimmed the roots back hard and put it straight into the pot...

After about 8 weeks whilst I was out the back watering my other bonsai I noticed some new growth growing from the Casuarina... after 8 weeks of waiting and checking for any signs of life I was so excited when I saw the bright green foliage emerging, especially after weeks of a nagging fiance who insisted it was dead and to throw it out...

Attached are some photo's.

Can anyone suggest what my next step would be... any ideas. One of the photos is of the top of the trunk where I gave it the chop.. should I neaten this a bit more now?

Any suggestions and criticism welcomed so fire away

gday mate :D

now that it is shooting you will start to get some options of where to go, thes do grow rather quickly so it shouldnt be to long before you can selectivly prune and wire, there should be a plethora of new growth coming out on it.

im not sure on the size of it, but you will most likely cut back to a new shoot once it has thickened enough to create some taper. if possible i would heavily wire the trunk and try and some more movement to it as it has a slight curve to it but it could be a bit better. other wise your other option is to wire it and pull it straight.

keep us posted when it gets a little further on :D

This trunk is phenomenal ...
If it were trained in a plastic pot or wooden box, there would be a progress faster??
Here in Brazil we usually trained in pots or larger boxes for the education of the tree.
Just curious ...

nice trunk !

A Bonsai pot is not the best place for it as the development will be much slower
Having said that you can put it where you like so will get lots os attention too

Do nothing but let it rcover and then you will have to decide what to keep from the shoots and wire them all to give the tree the direction it needs
