Dont miss the autumn colour at the NBPCA

Post by NBPCA »

Autumn is a great time to visit the NBPCA, plan a trip before all of the leaves fall off!

The English elm has coloured very fast, and the leaves wont be on much longer. The maple group is just starting to get some nice colour. The trident maples and other deciduous trees in the collection have yet to change colour at all.

Cheers,

Did some more photography today. We still have some maples and elms that have yet to start changing colour, but these pics show others that are well on their way. The English elm has about 3 leaves left on it - it changed from green to yellow to nothing in a very short time.

Enjoy!

Hi Jamie

Strictly speaking there are no Swampies in the collection.

There is Taxodium distichun var Mexicanum (AKA Taxodium mucrontaum) which is the montezuma Cypress. Its leaf type is semi persistant rather than deciduous. A small but significant difference as you can see from the photo above. As I collected the seed for all but the major tree in the group it has been a major part of my time with bonsai.

My Swampy at home is orange and brown whereas the Montezuma is still bright green.

Sorry about the background - pressing the button on the camera and racing to the black fabric to hold it up proved somewhat testing!

And... this thing is way too heavy for just me to carry into the studio!!!

I reckon the tray is as long as I am - what say Grant?

Hi Leigh,

As you know it takes about 4 people to slide it sideways and 6 people to repot it; plus an hydraulic trolley or two and heavy duty turntable.

Why do you think I gave it away.

Hi Leigh, Your care of these deciduous trees is a credit to you. To keep the foliage in such good order right through to autumn is fantastic, especially on the palmatums. Everything is happening very late here in Olinda. The tridents are still throwing out a bit of new growth and the palmatums are just starting to turn.

Hi Craig,

The japanese maple group in the collection was kept in the shady part of the collection till about 4 weeks ago and did not suffer any leaf burn at all during summer.

It was then moved into a very sunny spot where it gets more sun and cold at night and it has colored up very nicely. All the trees in the collection are turned twice daily so it gets sun from all around as well.

We have a single Japanese maple that has barely started to color yet as the nights have actually been quite mild(for Canberra) so far.

Do you have the necessary equipment in the NBPCA? I had wondered why someone would give such a spectacular group planting - now I THINK I understand.
