Bothersome Bottle brush

Post by Pup »

G, day guys n gals.
This Callistemon was given to me in march of 2007. I had just traded some exotics for some natives. My mate said hey I don't know what to do with this you can have it. See what you can do!!.Well I have had a few different ideas style (oops ) wise. I have been looking for original pics. The earliest is what I did when I got it home. I took it out of the bright blue pot and put it in this one. It is planted in the first as I got it. It had an interesting bit at the top!! and really nothing else. So I thought semi cascade or wind swept. I tried them and was not happy, but all the while it was growing and pushing out new growth. So to day I thought as it is cold today only 33 I would do something. Well here we are with before and after shots. With a long long way to go.

Hi Pup, very nice work, I've read many of your progression posts and works, you should be called the 'Native Magician'. Thanks for sharing, I will definitely try this method.

Cheers,
Elias

Hi Pup and liek the final view vey much
Witht eh cutting, I notice that you hav ethe leaves touching the side of the bottle, Is this OK?
I was alwasy told that the foliage or branch should not be in contact witht he glassohouse material

I will be watching for the next couple of days if necessary will cut it off. It is under shade at the moment, and our weather is set for a couple of days down at 30 so that should be OK for now I will let you know if I have cut them off.
I am thinking of a tilt up to the right will wait and see.. :) Pup

Love your material and what you are doing with it. Inspirational. Initially I rather fancied the windswept version but then, considering the growth of a callistimon, your chosen angle is much better.

Sorry did not see this till it was dark so no update today, if I get time tomorrow, as we have a busy day tomorrow.

The striking mix I use is the same for all cuttings 50% gravel as in aquarium 50% coco peat, I use honey on the base of the cutting.

I actually preferred it as a windswept, looks more natural to me. The only wild calistemons i see regulary are along the local creeks and while not technically windswept they still have that look from the years of flood damage. Also often large shari's and hollow trunks on the older tree's

Here are the updates asked for, this tree was not as floriferous as my others, but I did nearly lose it to being root bound.
So I have given it a hard prune now, and it will get another in late March early April next year for shape.
Then as the tips break the silhouette, they will be pinched out.

There are also a couple of junior.
