Corky Bark Elm

Hi All,

I am fairly new to bonsai and very new to this site.

I have a question in re guards to my Corky Bark Elm. Should i bring it indoors during the night time in winter? recently it isnt looking to healthy. I was presuming that this may be the cause.
The leaves are starting to brown and are dropping off. I water it only when the soil becomes slightly dry and also the last time i feed it was approx 3 weeks ago.

Any advice as to why this may be happening is greatly appreciated.

Adam your elm should be going dormant this time of year.
I believe your located in a cold enough area to make the tree lose its leaves and have a long nap. Dont bring it inside as the extra warmth will induce bud activation. keep it out in the sun and Just watch the watering as it wont be using as much since its slowing down and cut the fert, i use bloom booster up untill end may than pretty much stop now untill spring.

It is a deciduous tree the leaves should be falling now. At the risk of sounding nastie which is not my intension.

Do you bring the roses because it is getting cold. Trees need the cold to go through there growth cycle. Withe the exception of tropical trees.

I hope this helps in some way to alay your fears. Some Ulmus ( elms ) do not always lose all there leaves in winter, but my corky barks always do.

I have trees at the moment that have old and new growth on them.

Thanks for the pointers everyone, greatly appreciated.
I'll leave the elm outside and cut back on the fert.

Should i look at taking the wiring off during winter?
Or just before spring?

I like to take the wire off and rewire whilst the leaves are off the tree. Makes it easier.
