Can anyone ID this? I've been given permission to dig it if I want it.. But I have no idea of what it is.

i can see the future in it, and i see you digging up this tree and making a nice bonsai. The ID will fall into place later........

Its a hibiscus. I don't know what variety, I know the flowers are purple but that's about it.
I have one in my front yard, there are about 20 in the next street over and a block owner has a hedge of them.
Young and hostile but not stupid.

Good work Asus!

Its Hibiscus insularis. It is native and rare in the wild, endemic to an island. I have heard it makes a great bonsai but have not tried myself.

Certain hibiscus are . I have a 50 year old one on the property at least 5 metres high triple trunked. It has been dormant now for a few weeks and just got a prune i havent seen it in flower yet as i arrived too late but heard its pretty nice :P

The deciduous hibiscus is a really old fashioned plant not seen much around these days. When I was living in footscray I saw them often in old gardens. there is a few colours.
