Radiata Grafting?
Has anybody out there had any experience grafting branches on Radiata pine? I have gap up high on an old tree that i can no longer tolerate, so i only need a small branch to fill the gap. I spose it may be just like any other pine? I'm thinking approach graft. Any advice appreciated, or else i may just have to put in a jin.

Re: Radiata Grafting?
I've not grafted radiata but I have done JBP. Maybe the two would graft the same. I use the "little plastic bag over the graft scion with some damp sphagnum inside the bag" method. Not an easy subject to discuss in a few lines. Best bet would be to google it. cbobgo put up a video of Brent Walston grafting small JBP on youtube, and check out this link

Yes, they are put in upside down, gives the branch direction, think about it.
Definitely have a go at it, grafting is a very satisfying skill.
happy grafting

Thanks guys(will check out that link). Hey Ant i will talk to Q at next club meeting. May bring pine with me so you all can throw 2 bob in. NO its not to be reduced, just compressed maybe. Bark on this is incredible but previous owner let all growth go so its all too far from the trunk. Have picture up soon. Raf is crook had to rescue him from daycare, so inside today.

Re: Radiata Grafting?
Next Couple of months should be the best for grafting pines.
There is an article about pine grafting that wraps the end of the scion in plastic wrap before it is gratfed to the tree instead of putting a bag over the graft after. I liked the simplicity of this method and wanted to try it this year.
Don't spose anyone knows where I can find the article agian?

It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Re: Radiata Grafting?
Heres the pine. it has a lot of problems but the bark makes it worthwhile. where the big false jin is near the top is where i need a branch or three. the low bottom branch may have to go but if ican make it work i would like to keep it. i am wiring secondary branches and then tertiary, but mostly trying to get foliage closer to trunk as it was miles away. i would love to get Walter Pall to help me with this one. i would just like it to look natural and relaxed cos the bark already makes it look old. Virts welcome.

I found this http://bonsaitonight.com/2010/03/02/tru ... lack-pine/ which is quite useful.
