Trident Ideas

Post by Hutch11 »

Gday Everyone,

Well it's another cold and wet Sunday Morning here in Melbourne.. which I love by the way. Everything in the garden is more fresh and alive, seemingly. I have attached some photo's (probably more than is necessary) of a Trdent Maple that has been growing for a while. I am hoping to wire her up shortly and find a nice new pot to put her in. Can anyone suggest any ideas for me, perhaps maybe a photoshop image??

Hope you all have a nice relaxing Sunday,

Many thanks,,

nice little start to that one mate!

what are your ideas for it? what do you see? are you happy with the trunk size? and taper? if not then growing it more is necessary, if you are you could start to select and prune branches that you dont want/want and iwre it out, i have realised deciduous trees should be styled like a deciduous tree, not a conifer, which i have been doing with a couple of virts for D trees. if you are going for a broom sort of style which is a fairly natural stly for the tree, lower branches can be a little more horizontal, then as you go up the tree they sort of go a little more vertical. going out slightly then up, developing a dense branching :D

ant will be able to maybe explain better then me, i will try and V for you :D

Gday Jamie,

I like the idea of styling them more like a deciduous tree.. it makes sense and is 'natural'. Thanks for the virts, I think I will go with something like that!!!

Nice stock Hutch!
I am a big fan of the 'natural' look aswell, but you have so many options with this one.
I reciprocate what Jamie said - get the bottom branches more horizontal, with the branches looking like it's weighted by the foliage. Then as you move up the tree the branches should start angling out and up, like most trees you would see every day.
But keep the branch length in ratio to the trunk. If you need to shorten the length of any branches, they back bud pretty well.
The pot height, as a rule, should be about the same depth as the trunk width, and the width of the pot should be slightly smaller than the width of the whole of the tree to the outermost foliage. But remember to only pot when you are happy with the trunk width.

There are so many good Bonsai brains here, and as i like to say - advise is free, and you can choose how much, if any, you want to use.

Good luck and keep us posted!
Do i have a plethora of pinatas?
