HI all, bought this box from Kmart garden at the beginning of last year, it looked very healthy, but it gradually started to die off after I bought it. It had a lot of clay, so I prized some away, taking great care as the root ball was so small already that I didn't want to damage it any further. I didn;t need to chop of any roots at the time when sticking it into a bonsai pot - I stuck it right in as the root system was already very small.
Just about 2 months ago it started to shoot back, so I endured about 18-20 months of watching it die, just to have it now come back with a flurish, I've even given it it's first trim a few weeks ago!
it has a great trunk, the reason I bought it, and now I can see awesome nebari, apart from one wayward root that has sent a runner into the soil at the end, so I think we should be right here, time will tell. it is VERY tough and can;t be bent, all the branches are like this, very very rigid.
I repotted it today into a nice pot and spent about an hour removing all the clay, taking great care not to chop any roots out at all, they are all very healthy, just not very long, so I wanted to keep as many as possible in there.
it currently stands about 40cm tall, trunk about 5-7cm accross, about 10-15cm at the nebari-soil level. pot about 5cm deep with soil.
I think with some creative thinking, we can come up with a design, what do you think?

Re: Box survivor
Marc being in the poor health that it is I would be planting in a small box or terracota pot that is slightly larger than the bonsai pot.
This tree will be alot of fun when it's vigor returns.

It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Re: Box survivor
I recon that that's a good option Ozzy. But not until the tree gains some vigour - it worries me a bit.

Re: Box survivor
Well.... that would be the sensible thing to do.... I guess I should.... Just wanted to start on it, but, haste could be it's downfall...
And I love the Broom, could be a good option.
