BIG GREEN FLIES!!!

Post by Loretta »

Does anyone else notice big green flies sitting on their bonsais or am I the only one :x :x
There are two dogs next door (don't know if they are attracting them - if they are you'd think the flies would be on their side of the fence wouldn't you) :? :? ........Also, I've been watering and spraying the leaves of my bonsais with diluted fish emulsion  do you think that would be what's attracting them :?: These flies are like big green blow-flys and all they do is sit on the leaves...in the mornings there are literally dozens of them...I think they sleep there overnight. They don't ever land on me like a common fly would...has anyone else experienced this
Hey FLY...you should be able to enlighten me

G'day Loretta, just say " SHU FLY " and they will go    , try burning some Incense under your trees, or some citronella oil, :)
James :D

It will also calm the trees, and they won't worry about the flies

Yep. Since I had the chooks. There are heaps of green flies but they only appears in summer when it's warm.
Always we hope someone else has the answer.

Gday Loretta!

I seem to recall a lot of big, green flies last Spring/Summer, but like you, I could not see them doing anything offensive. When you say "big" do you mean "really big", like the ones on this page? Or are they just "big", like the ones on this page? Either way, I doubt that the flies themselves are doing any harm, and they could be doing some good in your garden.

Good luck!

Fly.

I guess my thanks are due for you all going to the trouble of solving my situation.

1. Nauticadlay...it's quite warm up here and yes, I also thought fish emulsion could be a contributing factor.

2. James......I tried the "shoo fly" to no avail, hadn't thought of burning incense though..*If all else fails*

3. Kvan.......No chooks here, so that had no bearing, don't even use chook manure.

4. And Buddah....No, I knew by the look of them that they weren't cicadas...but they could have been!!!

I got home from work at 2215 tonite, got a torch and went down to see if the flys were there at night. I only seen
a couple...BUT :o .. there was a bloody great big web with an even great bigger spider in the middle which wasn't there today. So, I'm not the only one who's noticed the flies  He's built his web right above them  I will definately go on safari in the morning and show you the photos...providing the spider hasn't eaten them all

Well I went down at 7am and low and behold...no flies...no spider  I can only think the smell of the fish emulsion has worn off (or it was too early and too cool for it to be pungent) and "the early bird catches the worm - or spider in this case"
I'll check for the flies later when it warms up a bit

As Fly has pointed out there's lots of species, all with different habits and habitats. Irridescent blue/green blowflies in this area are mostly 'Lucy' - the sheep blowfly. This is the one that attacks sheep causing flystrike. Your use of fish emulsion could be attracting them as they love rotting meat. If that's what they are they won't cause you any problems and wile they're on your bonsai they won't be on the sheep?

Gday Loretta & Co!

I'm with Shibui on this one: looks like one of the blowflies to me. From memory, many adult blowies only feeds on nectar, so you need not worry about them... If you have sheep, you might be a little concerned. ;)

Bzzzzz.

No sheep arpundTownsville, Shibui. They would die from heat exhaustion - the humidity would weigh down the wool and they would drown in the monsoon weather
