English Elm story

This elm was bought from Mick Balzary in 2007. I was picking up a ground grown black pine when I noticed this tree. It is what was left of a larger tree which had died back and Mick was taking it to the sales table at our annual show. I save him the room in his car.

In 2008 I started work on it and also posted it on Bonsai Talk. I had various ideas on the design myself and by posting it I received some others.

The second pic is a virt done by an American member of BT. I liked the concept and as you can see by the latest pic the tree has ended up close to that design.

Good start Peter. The only issue I have is the branch on the left going upwards and crossing over other branches. But it is your tree and if you like it that's all that matters.

I like the potting angle heading to the left like on the virt than the more upright as you have it currently.

are you going to take the branches back a bit to get ramification closer to the trunk?

Hi Peter,
I agree it would be great to see some more pic of your Elm with full leaf coverage. How often would you be re-potting an Elm like yours?

I haven't done any work on this tree since 2010. I have cleaned it up and posted a pic as it is today. Next year it will be re-potted and re orientated slightly.

Now that is a very nice EE . Nothing done to it in 2 years and still looks this great .
Love the semi hollow trunk would look good carved out I think .
Ever thought of selling this tree mate I know just the addict that would love it

I apologize for missing this. No its not for sale. As far as the dimensions go, I will post them when I have a chance to check them. I think is about 400mm in height.

Very graceful, with a trunk full of character. Would you consider bringing something round from the back to put a little foliage in the gap right in the centre?

Love it just the way it is .

I did some wiring yesterday,and after a few photos to study I decided to reduce the height of middle section which brings it more into line with the virt.
As you can see the top of each of the first and second sections will require filling out.

I absolutely love this tree ... One of the better mid- size English elms I've seen.
Love the natural hollow part and the overall style you've made this into.
Being an absolute EE NUT I enjoy to watch this tree progress year after year . I was hoping to see it at the collection when I was there last month or at the convention . Hopefully one day I will see it in person .
Great job your doing please keep us posted as you progress this gem !
Hopefully one day some of mine will be of such quality and grace .
