Hi Notae, Is it flowering now? If so it could be a kurume. The main flowering period for satsuki is November - around here anyway, they do spot flower too though.
The foliage sounds very small. Its not anything that I recognise. The flower looks double, lots of petals there.

Flower almost looks spot on to one of my Kurume's.

Regards, Mitchell.

Re: azalea id please satsuki what??
I'd still be guessing kurume, though I don't know of any with quite such small leaves as saotome. There aren't many satsuki with that many petals. There are a few satsuki/kurume crosses. Its very beautiful anyway, strong bright flower colour and with the small leaves its sure to make a great bonsai subjectnotae wrote:Sorry ..on closer view has 2 layers of petals..Only 1 branch is in flower.at present

Hi Notae,
Could this possibly be Hastagiri? Unfortunately that doesn't make it a Satsuki.

Looks almost identical to my kurume, which is just starting to flower. Really nice flowers.

Hope you do not mind me adding my own to this thread
I thought it might be satsuki 'gumpo"
I am new to azaleas and perhaps I have wrongly identified this one which is in full flower now.Is it flowering now? If so it could be a kurume. The main flowering period for satsuki is November - around here anyway, they do spot flower too though.

Re: azalea id please satsuki what??
its not the satsuki Gumpo. Probably an ordinary indica I think (Satsuki are also indica). Gumpo is pretty variable, some are white and some pink and some both, it also seems to be a convenient name for anything that a nursery is unsure about too. Here's a pic of gumpo from the net...Gerard wrote:Hope you do not mind me adding my own to this threadI am new to azaleas and perhaps I have wrongly identified this one which is in full flower now.Is it flowering now?
