Bonsai supplier in Perth?

Post by lenaorchid »

Hello everyone. I'm fairly new to the art or growing bonsais although I have admired them since I was a little girl. Just recently I decided to have a go and grow and care for my own so having said that, does anyone know of any good nurseries they can reccomend in Perth? I know of one in MT Lawley (I think) and there is another one that I have seen at the markets. I would truly appreciate any help :)

Thanks for the replies :)
@PUP: I've been to Lee's Bonsai before. It was a bit of a surprise but some beautiful trees were on display. I thought about going to the one in West Swan but it was so far away from where I lived that I wasn't sure if it would be worth the trip.

@Nealweb: Thank you. It's been a long time since I've been to the Subi markets. I may have to arrange a trip :)

You're welcome. You will find that Jimmy (at Subi markets) one of the more affordable places for bonsai, price wise. Some of the other markets do sell them too, last time I went to freo I saw that thw bonsai shop wasn't there any more but one of the northern suburb markets, maybe Waneroo has some and I've heard they are good.

Ofcourse nothing beats joining a club for great advice and also great stock to trade and buy. I noticed your favorite species is maples. The local expert on all things maple is a guy called John Oldland, I think he is a member of both the bonsai workshop and the bonsai society.

Have fun :D

Hi,
Yeah there's a husband and wife team i believe that run stalls from the Wanneroo and Malaga markets. From what i've seen you can get well developed junipers and the like for $100 and under, the artist(s) have good taste i reckon.

Other than that - i'm open to suggestions as well, apart from joining the bonsai society of WA in the near future i'm on the hunt for good stocks to peruse! (isn't everyone)

All of the above posts are good starting points Lenaorchid. Joining one or both of the clubs is an excellent idea. I joined the Bonsai Workshop a couple of years ago, but unfortunatey due to work and family commitments haven't been able to make down for any meetings for a long time  ( living in Sth. Geraldton doesn't help....eh Pup :) ) They're a really nice bunch of people with a wealth of knowledge that they're only to happy to share. The club too is a great source for mateial and pre-trained trees.
There used to be an excellent nursery on North Lake rd. but that has since closed down :( . Pup! do you know what happened to this place?
Not only did they have some wonderful bonsai for sale...they had what was easily the best stock in Perth. Gingko's, Oaks, Ficus, Kei Apple, Mapels the list goes on...a real shame

Cheers!

Welcome

I urge you to join one of the clubs here in Perth because you will learn so much from all the wonderful people who are members and they all seem to be keen to go out of their way to make sure we newbies get to know the basics (which are a must if you are to truly enjoy getting the most out of your trees) and to assist with any semi-established trees you may purchase or are developing.

One thing to remember, if you buy a tree that you like, it becomes YOUR tree and therefore your responsibity. That does not mean that you can't change the style or let it grow bigger or even cut it right back and re-style again. In Japan, where there are trees that are hundreds of years old, obviously the person who first created the tree is not alive and neither are the others he/she may have handed it to and others who have had it in their possession after them to the current day. Given the evolution of the art of Bonsai, I am sure that the modern day masterpieces have actually changed considerably from when they were first created.

Also, as Neil mentioned, the shop in the Freo markets appears to have closed down with no indication of where he may have gone. There is a lady at the E-shed markets who sells "Bonsai" but they mostly appear to be seedlings in bonsai pots. Even the "established" bonsai she has, hasn't been potted correctly with no mesh over the drainage holes, nothing to hold the tree in place in the pot and no wiring of branches for style etc. That being said, however, if you are after starter stock, she generally has a few decent little ones for sale.

Also, don't be surprised, but you can obviously be disappointed - as I am sure everyone on this forum has been - if a tree dies on you. Some do it for absolutely no apparent reason while others might die because of the way you are treating them ie too much or too little water, cutting back too hard, cutting too many or the wrong roots or too much or too little sunlight, or the wrong type of light ie direct or indirect. It is all part of the learning process as I have learned and am still learning every day when I check on my family of little trees living outside my house.

Sorry to the more experienced members and masters on ausBonsai, if I, as a newbie, have overstepped the mark with my "advice". Any corrections or changes to what I have said are most welcome because if I have said anything wrong, I need to know as well.

Good luck and embrace what will become a new addiction.

I was at the stall at Malaga markets today and agree with BirchMan that they're done with good taste & i reckon good prices. I ended up buying a Chinese Elm for $43 that would easily sell for $70-$80 from other places. She also had, from memory, some nice Junipers, Maple, Ficus, Bougainvillea, Serissa, prices bout $15 to $400.

Mashby, you most definately have not overstepped any mark. All advice is good advice, even wrong advice - not that I am saying your advice is wrong - as long as any error is corrected. It is important that the so called Masters are also reminded of the views of the so called Newbies. I know (& no I am not calling myself a Master) I have learnt so much from so called Newbies over the years. Your advice is right on the money. We all start our Bonsai journey in our own back yard and it is not until we get out and about, usually to a Club, that we begin to grow ourselves. So, lenaorchid, get out there and meet the Pup and all his fellow Bonsai enthusiasts, you will thoughely enjoy the experience.

Yep, what he said. ;)
And for the record, I reckon a lot of "proper" Bonsai Nurseries could learn a lot from a visit to the two Markets mentioned in this thread. Their stuff is usually first rate. And the Wanneroo one is best for raw stock too.

G'day Banksia, I think you are referring to Bonsai and Bamboo nursery on Nth Lake road and I'm pretty sure its still there, atleast it was 6 or 8 months ago when I went out there for some bamboo for a garden I was maintaining at the time. The owner is a Mr Myles Yates, it is a wholesale nursery, he produces alot of bonsai that are sold at many of the nurseries around the place and did for a while have a bay at Cannings Trade Mart ( A wholesale nursery that is now open to the public) but I didn't see that there last time I visited. He does have heaps of great stock and if you give him a call and say that you grow bonsai then you may get an invite to come down and have a look when he is onsite. He's a very accomodating and friendly bloke. He has a small shop with some pots and tools too. In the past I have gotten some nice figs, chinese elm and juniper from him and he has many many more varieties than that out there, its quite a big operation.

I'm pretty sure I saw an add lately saying that he was open on weekends now too so give him a ring and check it out :D

Cheers,

Right you are Neil!. Just this week gone, I saw an ad in the Quokka for Bonsai 'n' Bamboo. Still open (only weekends though) with all the usual goodies on offer. The last time I went there was a few years ago, but hadn't bothered going back as I thought they were closing down. So glad to see they haven't, by far the best stock on offer in Perth.
Going to check it out sometime soon.....can't wait.

Cheers!

Hi all, in repsonse to Birchman regarding the stalls from Wanneroo & Malaga Markets, we've just uploaded our new website a couple of days ago

Very soon, we'll be uploading new content including more images of our bonsais in our gallery as well as tips and hints.

Kind regards

:gday: all,
I thought i'd let people know that Bonsai and Bamboo in Jandakot is having a sale over the next 3 weeks,,Myles is going to be moving eventually (down south somewhere )and is trying to get back to his normal paying job, so he won't really be available to the public after that. If you know him you can still go by appointment.
Open on sat and sun
10am to 4pm
lots and lots of trees all sizes, plenty of large trunked JPB, seedingJBP aswell, Junipers ,Cedars ,tridents, maples ,ficus ,lots of tortured figs out back(some real beauties too),there's so many different species i can't even remember all of them, especially if you can convince him to take you out the back :tu: ,, .Seriously i get lost for choice sometimes :palm:
Honestly anyone that hasn't been before should get out there and have a good look around because i can tell you , there is some great stock on that property,
so happy hunting people :tu:

p.s--- 848 Northlake Road Jandakot WA 6164
089414 9966

also i should mention it's cash only, no eftpos :(
