Well mid winter I took about 100 hardwood cuttings. These were a mix of bechtel crabapple, red hawthorn, apricot (mume) and prunus elvins. Due to having so many I thought it wouldn't hurt to lift a few out and see what's happening. I really want a few of each to strike. The prunus elvins I added to the cuttings cos I didn't want to waste the off cuts. As murphies law will have it the prunus elvins are growing masses of roots but the other types have non yet. Why is it the cuttings I don't need struck and the others have nothing yet? Argh!! Hahaha. Am still hopeful tho! One of the mine cuttings had callused nicely!

Yep it is Murphies law for bonsai astro I would wait till at least 10 weeks to check for roots.

good news on this update!! hehe.

i did some CAREFUL checking and a number of my apricots have struck. no green growth yet but definate roots and a few buds on one just starting to swell.

My weeping cherry cuttings have struck too!

and my bechtels crabapple have calloused nicely and just starting to send out roots.

im a happy fella. now just hoping my red hawthorn will take too!

Ok, so on the weekend I carefully removed my cuttings from their pot. Having not really expected many to strike when I took the cuttings I placed like 30 in each pot. Now that some struck I had to carefully remove them. This was easier than expected with the aid of a soft sprinkling of water. To my astonishment a large number of my mume have healthy root growth, along with my Bechtels crab, red hawthorn and weeping cherry. I very gently repotted each one in it's own small pot (28 in total!) and watered in with plant starter and seasol. Assuming they make it, how long does it take for green growth to occur once a cutting has struck roots?

Astro, leaf growth should be imminent. Be carefull not to over water them, while they have no leaves their hydration needs will be quite low.
