Spring Care

Post by matt.moriarty »

As a newby I have just a few queries in regards to some general maintenance. This is my first spring and I was wondering whether I should remove the wiring that has been in place over winter or do I leave it on longer. Also do I wire the any new desired growth now or do i need to wait till later in the season and just conecntrate on using scissors for pruning. If so, when do I start wiring the new growth. In terms of pruning, am I correct in thinking that I should be concentrate on removing the middle growth between the new sets of leaves.

Regards
Matt

Hi Matt, only you can tell when to take the wire off just keep a close eye on it and if it starts to dig in remove it. I generally put wire on my deciduous bonsai in winter and remove it when I defoliate in late spring early summer, you need to be careful though s the deciduous trees are growing very strongly during this period.
You can wire new growth as soon as it is strong enough to hold the wire.
With regards to pruning that would depend on which species you are dealing with as all of them have slightly different techniques.
