There is a Wisteria around the corner from my home that I noticed this year when it was flowering. Its overhanging into the street and I have decided to go pinch a few cuttings this weekend.
I have done a few cuttings before of other things but its been pretty crude, just cut - rooting hormone - pot in diatomite. And the success rate hasn’t been to good.
I would really love a wisteria that I can get flowering though so has anyone got any hints or tips on how to be successful, or what to look for in a Wisteria cutting.

Re: Wisteria cuttings
hi mate
I havent worked with wisteria before, but what I do with all my cuttings whether they are 3mm thick or 100mm thick is to soak them in a seasol/superthrive solution for anywhere from a day or so to a couple of weeks. (super thrive is optional, works just as well with seasol) then I plant out to diatomite fines. what you could do is with one of the cuttings is leave it in the seasol solution for a couple of weeks and you could possibly see these little white nublets growing from the trunk under the water line, these are the start of new roots, if it happens, then plant out and you should be good to go

Try a more sandy mix, keep wet and in shade for a week or so.

Re: Wisteria cuttings
Make sure you use wood which has flowered of your new plant will take 15 or 20 years to flower.

Re: Wisteria cuttings
I would like add to this. Wisteria take very easy from cuttings. Use a propagation mix. Depending on the quality of the mix you could add some fine Diatomite. But like Graig mentioned use material that has just flowered. Which means the cuttings should be between 3-5mm. After you cut them put them in some plant starter or use a hormone powder/gel. Idealy you should put them in an igloo or you can build a small plastic tunnel. A clear plastic bag over the pot with cutings can do the trick as well.craigw60 wrote:Make sure you use wood which has flowered of your new plant will take 15 or 20 years to flower.

I am covering all bases. I have 4 in propagation sand in an igloo, 2 potted in 100% diatomite , and 3 in a seasol/ST mix.

Re: Wisteria cuttings
ok its just over a month later, and no cuttings have survived. The ones oin the igloo didnt even last a week, the rest dies, just slower.
I might try again in december when we have really warm temps.
Is there anywhere in brisbane you can get established Wisteria ?

Re: Wisteria cuttings
The best time to make wisteria cuttings is ...strangly mid winter! I gave away heaps of thick cuttings recently but if you pm me, I can give you an establish tree. If you could find me a scarlet/pink hawthorn, I can trade one of my better trees for it too. Otherwise, I have one aside for you as for good karma
