Eucalyptus Nicholii - Back budding

Post by Fred »

Hi Folks

How well do Eucalyptus Nicholii back bud? I have a tree that needs some lower branches. Are there any techniques that will increase the chances of back budding?

Gday Fred!

Most Eucalypts are apically dominant, but many - like E. nicholii - can be forced to back-bud. What I tend to do is let the upper growth flourish, then cut it back hard. This serves two purposes: it gives the plant an opportunity to back-bud, and helps to create ramification and movement in the upper portions. If you do manage to achieve lower branching, it is important to keep the growth above in check.

I have also had some success in grafting Euc branches.

Good luck!

Fly.
