triple trunk literati privit

this is a privit i collected in may this year from the fence line of a paddock. i gave it its first styling last weekend. i was originally going to do a windswept style but when i really anylised the tree i found that this was the best option. id imagine that this tree is quite old as the trunk has some nice subtle bends in it and the trunk looks nicely aged, i reckon its about 15-20 years old possibly.

Good dig, but it might be difficult to keep a privet as a literati due to their growth habit. That said it never hurts to try and I will be interested to see how it turns out in the coming years. Would you mind keeping us posted?

I have to agree with Watto on this one and would think about shortening the height. Maybe a good shohin I know you would be loathe to lose the movement of the large tree . Keep it triple trunk though as privets develop good top growth.

I totally understand what your saying about keeping a privit as a literati might be tricky but right now I want to take the challenge, you never know how it's going to go exactly. I've heard that a good techique of controlling the growth is to keep the tree slghtly root bound, but not too long as this isn't healthy for the tree but just long enough that it will stop the growth being as vigorous as normal. But with this technique you have to have good timing and know when too much is too much. I did this with a little privit I had and it didn't grow alot but stayed nice and healthy.
But anyway I'm very excited about the tree and can't wait to see how it's going to go.

havnt updated this one for a long time ( sorry watto). i havnt really done any work on the tree until now since i last posted so it needed a total restyle as it had grown out of shape.
the dead wood top still needs work and ill give it a repot in the next coming week or so.

thanks mate, glad you like you like it. the original apex was always a problem and too far away from the other 2 trees. so i rectified the problem by jinning the top and using a lower branch to create the apex which was more suited.

Still more work to be done though on the second trunk and tweaking if the main trees branches.

Hugh, I really like the tree, but I think the second and third trunk need more movement for bunjingi. Right now they just give me the feeling of suckers that shot up when the main trunk received whatever natural insult would have broken off the top, and they look very young. I think with some added movement they would look not only older but also more harmonious with the main trunk.

Disclaimer - Not a bunjingi expert. But I do have a twin trunk melaleuca on my bench that will be one soon, so I've been doing lots of research on them. Just so you know how little my opinion may be worth.

totally with you there mate, the two other trunks do need more movement, probably the second one more than the third. ive given it a go just with basic wiring but hasnt done the job well enough. i might have to think a bit more about other methods to set a better shape. the trunk is quite thick, about 2.5cm, making it quite rigid and difficult to get the same kinds of bends like the main trunk.
