Fig Cuttings

Post by taobum »

I started work at a new job last week, and out behind the old building at the back of the property I found a fig that has grown from a hole about halfway up a 10ft high retaining wall. The main trunk has grown up and over the wall and a great big root has dropped straight down into the concrete below, what I want to do is take a clump of the smaller offshoot trunks with as much air root mass as I can and I'm wondering if that will be enough for survival? Any thoughts?

Excellent, thought it should work. Caretakers have already trimmed these branches back so I don't think they'll be missed, got a job for smoko time on Saturday now.

Got a couple of photos, what do people think? Got a bit ambitious and thinking it may be a bit large for a cutting, never tried this before.

Just had a look at it and think the left trunks will go and the right trunk cut down to the branch above the top of the bottle as the new apex

Looks like a good choice. I wouldn't be throwing the stuff away that you remove though. I'd be trying to remove them with some roots - especially that left trunk. From that lot, you can make half a dozen more trees.
Regards

Taffy.

I agree with Tman, should be able to get some more plants from the cuttings. Good choice on the new apex. This was a really good find. I really like the roots. Your going to have fun with that one

Thanks for the suggestion guys, have done the cuts this afternoon and ended up with 5 really nice trunks. Gave them all a good dose of Seasol. Time to let them rest a while now :)
