Dry spot in the pot

Still new to bonsai.
Here are my Metasequioa trees happy until the hot weather - leaves on the right side drying and disintegrating in an instant.
So convinced that I had given them enough water I pulled the pot. Found a dry spot in the soil (unhappy tree now on the left side). My uneducated guess - the moss is dead on the ground level above the dry spot and is thicker and different to other parts. Used to soak every 10 days but but stopped after finding caking in another pot (no sign of that in this one).
So last 3 weeks only watering from above.
These little fellows seem to suffer in the sun are they normally kept in a shade house?

Have re-potted after trimming roots and some branches - and will try to give it only morning sun.
And I have given moss a big miss until I know whats what.

Which side does the sun hit most? Do you turn the tree? is one side shaded? They are very thristy trees so you can let them sit in a water tray.

Yes one end would get more sun than the other, and I will use the a water tray - from what I have sussed the pots drainage holes sit above the water which is mixed with sand or pebbles ??

Hi cuwire ,if the pot sits in a sand tray just settle it own onto the sand then the root will work as a wick .Redwoods don't like hot pots so you can cover the pot with anything that prevents the sun from heating them up , they grow well in full sun part shade and the foliage hardens off to become quite robust .Cheers Alpineart
