My Bonsai Nook

Hi guys,

I haven't had time to post pictures of my 'nook' since I completed it. I did all the work myself, including diggin out the soil, leveling and laying the pavers.

I use the area a lot now - for working on plants and for just sitting enjoying a cool breeze and a coffee on a hot afternoon after school when I need to unwind from the antics of teenagers, or for marking exams etc.

Comments are welcome, as well as pictures of your own bonsai 'nook' or whatever you call your special area.

Very nice Glenda- Looks like you did a great job of the pavers and have yourself a great area to get into your bonsai collection which looks like it has grown a heap too! When you have recovered from the work you can come and do mine!

Not all the plants are mine. Some belong to my son David, who attends university 400km north of here, and I get custody

I have a very nasty habit of putting all cuttings into a pot, and they have a nasty habit of nearly every cutting growing. I am forever giving away plants to the point the bonsai club don't want any more (but they give me all the cuttings they want struck!)

I am working very hard to overcome this habit. The last time I cut my elms back most of the cuttings went in the bin . I am still recovering from that.

That's a great job Glenda - you've done yourself proud. Gives you a good feeling knowing you've done all the work yourself - even the aches and pains of doing it make it all worthwhile.

Hi Fae, that would be around now. I need to get rid of David's plants to make room for mine. Ken - anytime you are up this way. But be warned. I only serve highly addictive Trung Nguen Vietnamese coffee. I have to get it from Townsville - 400 kn north and they won't post it. AND you have to help with any marking I may have!

Thanks, people. I feel I need to explain here a little. I do have a husband who is very capable, but his hobby is restoring old Valiants, and collecting vintage slot cars (he is currently Australian Champion for Group 12, and past Australian Champion for Group 15). He also runs a business and works very long hours. I did the work on my nook during the last school holidays - I had time and he had none to help me. I am a very independent woman and don't like waiting if I don't need too, so I did it myself. I had quotes on having the work done, which amounted to around $2700, plus the cost of the shade cloth. I did have the coppers logs cemented in for me by a friend from school, but did everything else myself, and the total came to $800, including the cost of the shade cloth. That saving was incentive to do it myself, but in retrospect I would probably pay the money next time - it was the hardest physical work I have ever done!

I love your nook, it would be a really nice place to sit & escape the world, don't know if I would volunteer to mark papers but any other request & I am your slave.....

My own nook is more of a sprawl, tho I am in the process of cleaning up & getting more benching made. Will post some pics when I am done. No hard paving tho (your right it is damn hard work), just some shade & benchs and it certainly wont be as neat or organised as yours.

Is that a mulberry in the big pot, middle of the open side? YUM YUM YUM I bet they absolutely fly up there, they grow fast enough down here.

The big blue pot? That is Arabica coffee, complete with its first crop of beans that aren't ripe yet!

Glenda, I like the Besser bricks and planks - I'll probably end up using that myself. As for the labour, your nook is your sanctuary, its yours now, in a way that nothing you pay for will ever be.

looks very nice glenda, you might want to watch out for the heat that will radiate from the shed, i have trouble with leaf burn on trees i have near my shed in summer.The heat that builds right next to the shed is easy 10 degree's hotter, at our last house i put sheets of small bambo against it, really cut the heat back
