Callistemon Hichinbrook "dwarf"

Post by Bretts »

After reading about a Callistemon in Bonsai Focus(5/2007) where they took a young tree that had been wrapped around a bamboo stake and made a nice little tree. I noticed it had the fatter stubby leaves that I have seen around but not noticed anyone doing as bonsai.
Stopped in at a Forestry nursery to see if they had any tube stock which they didn't and they had no idea which callistemon I was talking about.
It was quite funny in the end because I spotted something like it but it took me some time to drag them back saying it looks like this one back there what is that. It was a dwarf callistemon called Hinchinbrook, not tube stock but close enough.
I have trimmed it down and wired as much shape into the trunk as possible following the idea in bonsai Focus it should make a nice little tree in a few years if I don't kill it.
Here is a link to a picture of the species

Has anyone been using any other dwarf Callistemon?
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Callistemon 'Little John' is a fairly 'dwarf' cultivar that is being grown by quite a few people as bonsai. Seems to be going OK. In the ground they reach about 1.5m or so, but also grow relatively slowly compared to others.
