When creating a shari ?

Post by Paulneill »

Hi I recently watched a few videos of bonsai world where they were creating shari on young feld trained junipers in japan they scraped bark off in a spiral fashion only removing a thin strip each growing session . Eventually making it wider . But does this mean all the bark eventually all the bark can be removed ? Also what is best used to treat the dead wood ?

they leave a thin Strip of bark as if you take it all off the tree will die

the bare section is treated with lime sulphur

I believe you watched someone creating a spiral "plate" trunkline.
As you mention a thin strip is removed each growing season up the spiral. This mean new wood is only added each season to the edge where the live tissue is. eventually instead of just having a round section spiral trunk you end up with a spiral flat plate trunk. In essence a spiraling ribbon trunkline. Finally a live vein is left on just the edge of the plate trunkline sometimes disguised from view completely.

:)
Regards, Mitchell.
