Invitation to a DIG!
Each year the Goulburn Bonsai Society organises a dig for their members, and if there are too many trees for our needs, we invited other bonsai clubs to enjoy the spoils. The theory being that it is better that someone digs a future champion even if that someone isn't from our society rather than seeing those trees eventually bulldozed.
This year we have made arrangements to dig plums, these are wild plums (not from an old orchard) so we are not sure what their exact type is, but they are growing wild and we are going to dig them. We will be digging in mid to late August, so a winter dig in Goulburn is always an "interesting" day.
This year we would like to invite a few members of AusBonsai to enjoy a day out with the promise of a tree or two. I can tell you that the trees are very close to Goulburn and you will be able to drive quite close to the loaction, but there will be just a very small climb. For those who have joined us in the past where the digging was very easy, this location will be a bit more difficult, but still fun.
We do need to limit the diggers to a managable number, but if you are interested in joining us for a fun day out, please let me know.
The actual date will be advised in the next week or two.
Kind regards
Watto

Leigh,
There are nearly all sizes except really huge. Any way, nothing a chainsaw wouldn't fix.

Re: Invitation to a DIG!
I should have said that this is not an event by AusBonsai, but is an event by the Goulburn Bonsai Society Inc that Steven has allowed us to extend an invitation to you all.

Re: Invitation to a DIG!
Not just a fun day out but also very informative.
Watto always picks the best spots for a dig, on this day you are guaranteed a great tree, or Watto will give you a hundred
ok that's not true, but you will have a good one out.

I would like to come along. I don't have digging tools as I live in an apartment. I will offer my digging services for whoever lends me their tools.

Re: Invitation to a DIG!
I've got plenty of post hole digging tools so they should suffice for plums.
If the soil is anything like mine, (HEAVY clay) we'll need the chilsel point crow bars!

Re: Invitation to a DIG!
Hi Watto,
I would love to come. I remember going to the hawthorn dig in '08, that was one cold and windy day for a dig. But still a lot of fun and I hope for a better digging condition this time round.
Cheers,
Mario

Re: Invitation to a DIG!
Thankyou all for your interest.
In previous years we have dug in some interesting weather conditions including mild and warm about 18 deg C to blizzard and snow - but no matter what it will be rewarding. This years location could either be sheltered or a wind tunnel, only time will tell.
