wood rot

Hi.
My liquidamber has wood rot.I've treated the woodrot ok, but it has left a 4cm deep hole going down into the trunk.Trunk is about 5cm dia.
The problem I now have,is ,every time it rains the hole fills with water.And as anyone living in sydney would know,the hole has been overflowing the last few weeks.
Any suggestions as to what i can use to fill and seal the hole wothout harming the tree?

I had a similar problem with a liquidamber.

and it would suit the tree carve out part of the trunk down to the base of the hole. This should stop water from sitting inside the trunk.

Liquidambers are soft wood and I would also suggest sealing the wood.

I gave up on preserving deadwood. I rather let the tree settle where it wants and work with what is there. It saves any heartbreak when you lose the deadwood.
A pic might help but I would probably carve it through as suggested so it can drian. Or leave it be and see what becomes there would be very rare cases of this causing health issues.

thanks for the reply fae.after you carved out the dead wood,did the bark around the hole callous over?in the
past i have had little success in getting the bark to callous over the wound.

Well I didn't want to tell you but I lost the plant.

I had bought the tree from a nursery which had been a large tree,cut down and sealed. There was fungus growing from the base of the plant and I kept rubbing off not realising that inside the tree was very rotten. I dug out the rotted inside and carved the side of the tree so that water would drain. Did seal the edges but I believe that I was too late in discovering the rot.
