(Dead) - [KCPOOLE] Grevillea semperflorens

Post by kcpoole »

Species: Grevillea semperflorens
Height: 800mm
Origin: Forestry Commission Nursery - Castle Hill
Cost: $7.00 ( Throw out Bin)

I picked this tree up befoe the comp was anounced as I thought it was quite nice with small foliage and compact growth. Figured it will do well as a Bonsai and was going to plant out in the garden to grow out and fatten up, but then the comp was anounced and plans changed.
I hope to get exra Votes at the Judging beacuse it is a Natve :-) and it has (hopefully) Lots of nice flowers to woo the ladies, :fc:

Nice one Ken. Grevs make great bonsai, and flower so well too.
Good luck.

Thanks :-)
i thought these would be particularly nice as the leaves are already quite small and the flowers are well praportioned too :-)
Clinton Nesci was concerned that they might not last very long as Bonsai, but the only way to find out that is to try them and see :-)

Grevilleas are doing OK so far as bonsai. Ray Nesci has one (I haven't been there for a year) that was many years old and still powering on. A friend here in Canberra has some that are in excess of 5 years, maybe 10 and again looking just fine.

Yes, do give them a try and see what luck you have. Even if they only live for 5-10 years, you will have much pleasure all along the way. With them you don't need to wait until they are 50+ years old to start enjoying their looks!

Thanks Roger
Al little side note re this tree.
It is covered in flowers at the moment, and sitting on my benches in full sun. I have mamny large native trees around the neighbourhood, and as such have lots of native birds in my garden.
I noticed that a family of Noisy Mynahs have taken a liking to Grevillea flowers and there is usually at least one climbing all over this tree drinking the nectar :-)

If i cut it back they will probably get cranky with mefor cutting all the flowers off

Cut back hard and roots washed out and laso cut back very hard.
The roots were just a big ball so had to bareroot and cut off lots, to give a fighting chance to get into a pot next year.
I hope it will cope with this treatment :fc:

I will not let either tree flower over the next 12 months to stop it wasting energy, so unfortunately for the birds they will not have anything to eat :-)

Attractive trunk line, Ken.
Look forward to hearing how the cut at the back heals. I don't think grevs heal all that quickly, but we need many more observations.

I have been watching my trees in Trepidation and I thought this one had gone and woud have to be withdrawn as all the remaining foliage had shrivelled and dropped off. On the weekend I noticed some green shoots, and today had a good look and found heaps :-) Yay!! :D

Looks like this one has pulled thru its harsh root prune and is now powering on.
dunno how much growth I can get in a year, but we will see :-)

Hi Ken,

Wondering if you gave the grevillea any special treatment after the chop? I've killed both the ones I chopped back :( Not sure if I need to cross my fingers the other way, or if there's something I'm not doing :fc:

Thanks,

Andrew

Not really anything special, Just out of direct sun for a few weeks, and Seasol drink every weekend for a month or 2 till they show signs of positive growth.
Full sun after about 1 month

They get watered every day, but i use Diatomite / Zeoloite mix so is very well draining

Ahhh sounds like I may have cooked them. Gave them a day or two under the patio then back to the normal spot. Thanks :)
