disease or pest on figs

all my figs are suffering from this on their leaves

they have tiny bumps on their leaves and then they start to go yellow and bubbly and then eventually fall off.

I dont know what it is or what to do about it so any help or idea as to what it is would be very helpful.

Hi hugh

The leaf with the yellow is just Chlorophyll withdrawal.
Chlorophyll withdrawal in figs are simply due to ageing leaf. Leaf drops happens twice a year in figs.

The bumps are hadathodes white spots often mistaken for a disease. perfectly natural.

so nothing to worry about.

the white spots are normal but in my experience the yellowing leaves is not. Possibly a nutrient deficiency.

I live in a cold climate and my figs live in an unheated igloo. I get yellow leaves, leaf drop and twig dieback during winter - probably due to humidity or temp or combination. I note that recently repotted trees do not suffer as badly as others. Good news is they always grow back each summer.

Hi Hugh,
That looks very much like Fungal disease. Spray with Lime Sulphur as directed on the bottle. Remove all fallen leaves as they will promote the disease next season. Dont over water the tree, pay it particular attention in this area.

Hi,
to me it also looks like a fungus. However, an infestation of scale on figs can occur which may produce weaking of the tree and leaves. Check for flat almost mollusc like little growths on trunk and branches. If you find these treat with a systemic insecticide like Confidor. If no scale, revert to the fungal treatment.
I wonder too whether it may be over watered.
Just my thoughts.

im guessing it could be a fungel of some kind, i sprayed all the affected trees with pest oil yesterday, but if i dont see improvements ill use the lime sulphur i think. it isnt over watered thats for sure.

There are two excellent books on ficus one by Jerry Meislik and the other by Leong Kwong from Sydney.

As for spraying with lime sulphur, do you wish to kill of the good leaves as well?. Lime sulphur is to be sprayed on dormant trees, any green leaves will be killed.

black spot -anthracnose usually occures when temp falls below 15 degree's cel and is exacerbated by excessive watering.
the infected leaves will eventually turn yellow with black spots and fall off.
to control keep plant stress from water and heat to a minimum.spray the plant with lime sulpur,sodium bicarbonate
or mancozeb.remove and destroy fallen leaves to reduce infective spores from regenerating next season
