Goulburn Bonsai Society Exhibition 2012

The Goulburn Bonsai Society is one of the smallest bonsai groups in Australia, but we still love to hold an annual exhibition of our bonsai. This is a lot of fun for all of us, but we also hope that other bonsai enthusiasts will also enjoy this little societies efforts. We only have about a dozen members but they are very committed to providing a display that is enjoyable to bonsai people and non-bonsai people alike.

Putting on an exhibition is a lot of hard work by a few people but this year we thought it was worth it even though the weather was unkind to us – cold and windy – which is not a great incentive to get people out. Nonetheless, very successful for a small group.

The first few photos are of the set-up:-

The before look.

Setting up for the exhibition part 1

Setting up work in progress part 2

However the important part is not the set up, but the trees. Generally we have our display so that all levels of bonsai expertise can exhibit and this year was no different. The first photos are trees from our less experienced members:-

Azalea

Crab Apple

Azalea

Fig

Pyracantha

Hawthorn

Elm

Privet

There were a few Shohin trees on display and here are a few of those:-

Juniper

English Elm

Chinese Elm

Black Pine

Wisteria

Last but not least are the larger bonsai on exhibition:-

Hawthorn

Chinese Elm

Cedar

Ivy

Olive

Juniper

Maple

During the exhibition there are two awards presented to trees. This bonsai was awarded the “Peoples Choice Award” which is voted by the visitors to the exhibition:-

Japanese Maple

This bonsai was awarded the “Presidents Award” as a bonsai which shows bonsai techniques of quality:-

Japanese Black Pine

As well as the exhibition there were demonstrations and a visiting potter with a very large selection of bonsai pots for sale. Penny from Mudlark Pottery is the potter and we really enjoyed her visit.

Check out the pots!

And these too!

The demonstrations were held on both days and were enjoyed by the large audience.

What will I do with this?

That is a very good result!

Not all demonstrations can be done inside, the really big trees were worked on outside.

From this……

Via a “small” cut…..

To this the end product for now. This tree does have the opportunity now to become a really good bonsai in 8 years or so.

A great weekend had by all the members of the Goulburn Bonsai Society.

  1. Thanks for the opportunity to “see” the Exhibition that I couldn’t get to in person again this year (sporting commitments). Great display from a small club!

  2. Hi there, congratulations on your display.
We are trying for some time to get in contact with the Goulbourn Bonsai Society to exchange newsletters or other information but so far have not been able to find a contact, website or address.
We would appreciate if you could help – we also have a Facebook page where you could get in contact with us
    Kind regards
