Monotoca elliptica- Heath Broom

Hi everyone,
Went on a dig yesterday and walking along I spotted this bush from 100 yds. I ran over to look at it and was amazed at it s trunk line. I hope you enjoy the pics. I will post some more if it progresses. It is in flower at the moment , very small white flowers. The trunk and bark are spectacular to say the least. I had to build it a custom grow box to keep it happy.

You dont need a phone call, you can have as many of these as you like my friend, oh did I mention I have more of these? No the screw is not stainless.

That is one nice plant, love the movement.
Mate you should change the screw to either stainless or brass as others could harm the plant.
You should be able to find a stainless screw from one of the many boat shops down there somewhere.

Got plenty of stainless screws, I just put those into deadwood areas to hold the thing in place till it sets in the box, It is a little awkward due to its trunk and branching as you would expect. I will change them out tomorrow, Thx for the heads up.

Hi Bonsai Panda,
What a fantastic tree ,i hope you have good luck with it.I have dug a few of these ,or something very similiar ,a lot smaller and no where near as much movement as that fella. Thanks for the I.D. i had no idea. Not a bad spot this south coast .

Very nice Panda, did you trim the foliage back at all, i don't know anything about this species, but i'd be taking the foliage back fairly hard. How many roots did it come with?

Hi Craig,
I took a lot of foliage off the tree, but yes it still needs more refinement. I wanted to get it in a growing box after soaking in a bath of seasol for a day. It had some large roots and some smaller fibrous feeders. This variety grows in the coastal sand dune environment and is very hardy. This tree is fairly old in comparison to other trees I saw that were 5m or taller. I saw a lot of gnarly trees that had aerial roots extending back and into the sand, was quite amazing how they grow.

What a great find Panda

Look forward to seeing the outcome for this one. Good luck on the recovery period.

Would look great set up in a tray eventually to highlight that magnificent trunk, and even landscaped with dry stream through the hole. Or start the search for the perfect rock to go in the hole.

Hey Panda, good stuff mate , I really hope it pulls through for you!
Would you consider culling the flowers to stop energy drain?...or maybe they are fully formed and it won't make much difference?
Would like to know the answer to that?...if the flowers are fully formed, do they continue to use up the plants energy compared to flowers/buds still growing and forming, hence taxing energy?
Sorry mate, I got a little side-tracked there!
If it survives, and I sure hope it does, I can see a ripper bonsai with a little branch bending etc!
How long did it take to dig and what was the root ball like?...did you bare root it?
