Shimpaku Juniper & Japanese Maple seeds

Post by David32 »

Hi,
I'm new to bonsai, I got my Melalueca a month ago and I've done a lot of reading and decided that I want to grow some tree's from seeds.
So I ordered me some Shimpaku seeds (20 seeds) and I couldn't find the right way to germinate them.
anyone had some experience with germinating Shimpaku or other Junipers?
I thought of using peat moss to germinate and grow the seed, will it work?
Also I'm getting some Japanese maple seeds, would like to read some tips about that.
I live in Israel so "winter" (10 degrees Celsius will probably be the lowest temprature) is coming...

Thanks

Hi David and welcome to ausbonsai.

Junipers can benifit fromthe colder weather to help germnation.

Its been a while since I have done any fromseed, but I have placed my juniper seed in some soil in a frezer bag and placed them in the freezer for a few weeks to start them off.

Its a slow way to begein the bonsai journey, but if you have no other access to stock, it may be the only way.

I wish you luck with them.

Regards,

Hi David and welcome. I think you are our first contributor in Israel

Hope you can provide up with some insight to the local Bonsai scene there as you skills develop.
Are there any Bonsai Clubs / nurseries local to you?
