Old Weeping Fig cleaned out

Hi All

Got to work on this Weeping Fig a little while ago. I think a beautiful little tree with an interesting and powerful trunk. The foliage has not been worked in a while and has got quite bushy with no definition. The problem there is a mature looking trunk with immature foliage making the tree look young overall. The definition to the layers creates space in the design and reducing the leaf size will increase the proportionate size of the tree.

I decided to rotate the tree to the right and have the front over the corner of the pot half way between the right and back views above. This smoothed out the roots and gave the trunk more width and movement. There is also a 'handle' root that groes away from the trunk that I did not want to remove, and rotating it took away the hole between it and the trunk.

Needs to be kept under control now to keep growth compact and leaves small.

Any thoughts?

Hi Tony...that trunk looks so chunky and I'm sure you can turn it into something quite stunning....somehow it looks a bit lacking in vigour-(leaf clour,lacking buds etc) perhaps its time to check out whats happening downstairs...is it originally yours or "aquired"..and finally do you think you'll go with the pot its in, or move it into something a bit flatter to accentuate the basal width? (not that I dont like the pot itself)

I really like that trunk Dog. Definitely lacking the fert and in need of a repot. Would've removed more leaves if it was healthier. Unfortunately not my tree yet, but I'm working on it

Would also change the pot when repotting, that one is too deep. Flatter and oval probably, but I do like the square over the corner with the flared sides.

Thanks Jerry. No nodes in that section unfortunately, so it will be hidden by foliage when the structure improves.

Will get to work on the tree again in April when back in Townsville. Some nice Figs up there.

Thanks Tony,I was just looking at it again and realised it's a bit bigger than I previously realised (I'm bit of a sucker for the bigger stuff, Pup smiles and says I'll get over it!) do you have any record of demensions? Cheers again ....Dog

Only around 450mm high and at least 150mm wide at the base. Pot sides around 300mm. It has good proportion to the trunk, just need to work on the proportion of the foliage and it will look bigger again in photo.

How big did you think it was? I would like to know how others see it. Always a good test for a Bonsai.

Probably thought about 350 x 150 thereabouts ,but today the back of the outdoor chair caught my eye and made me take more notice to the point of asking.The base looks a bit more than 150 at soil level, pot being 300.(I'm not forgetting my eyesight which is slowly in denial)

Would you consider a thread graft in that straight section of upper trunk?
