Whent on a olive hunt an found this :)

Post by Olivecrazy »

Took my three kids on an olive hunt yesterday found a nice olive below are some pictures. Hopefully if all goes well should have shoots in 2-4 weeks an be able to train basic design by Christmas they grow fast in the right conditions in South Australia.
The olive is about 80cm tall only branch alive is the one that goes to the left.

I always remember a story Janet S. told me about an Olive dig her and her best mate (those who know Janet will know who I mean ;) ) went on a few years ago. Janet's mate has a friend who had purchased some land in the Barossa and were going to plant a few grapes on it. The land was, surprisingly, covered in some fairly large olives that were destined to be removed. Anyhow, Janet and friend make arrangements to go up and help "clear" the land, but something came up, I forget what. Long side of a short story Janet and Pauline finally get to the Barossa, only to find a bulldozer had been in and cleared the intended vineyard and all the olives were pushed into a heap ready for burning. I can't recall the time span but it was what I considered, at the time, a very long time for trees to be out of the ground and still have any hope of recovery. Anyhow as the girls had travelled all that way it was decided to rumage through the heap and see if there was anything woth salvaging. They took a few likely candidates, which ended up being potted up. I dare say one or two of those trees make it to the show bench for the annual Bonsai Show to this day. Forgot to mention, it was the middle of summer when the trees were removed from the ground by that bulldozer blade. Olives, tough? Nup don't reckon they are

Tell you a funny story about Brown Hill Creek as well. Last visit to Adelaide (Bonsai wise) must have been 10 or 11 years ago. Went to a Bonsai Club meeting with the before mentioned two ladies and when asked what I was doing while in Adelaide I replied I was going to Brown Hill for some Olives and maybe an Ash or 2. Reply was I was wasteing my time as Brown Hill Creek had been dug out and there was nothing worth collecting there anymore. I ended up getting 6 or 7 trees in the morning, all good subjects. Good to hear the park has still been dug out, with nothing worth collecting there. Shepherds Hill was another area not worth digging in either. ;)
