I promise its the last one
Hi all,
This is just another pine I have purchased as stock from Ray at Dural.
I thought I might post the before photo and the design and show how I can or cannot stick to a plan.
Any thoughts welcome as to where I might be going wrong.

I don't know too much about pines specifically, your plans look achievable though, but I do like your sketch! Good luck!

Re: I promise its the last one
hi mate,
from your skecth, consider tilting the tree to the tright 10-20 degrees (clockwise) and losing the first right branch, will make a great tree. if you want to keep the slant, that will work to but same thing, no first right branch. will create a better tree, the first right branch takes from the main tree and trunk line that has nice movement.

Re: I promise its the last one
I considered that but I am always hesitant to cut low branches as once theyre gone there is no turning back wth black pines. Very hard to get back budding. I will think seriously about this option though.

Re: I promise its the last one
Thanks for the comments guys.
Here is the tree after a rough shaping and wiring.
I am undecided on the lowest right branch so for the moment it stays. There is a back branch slightly higher on the trunk so my thoughts at this stage are to keep it and get a foliage pad started at the back of the tree so not to take away from the dramatic trunk line until the first left branch. What are your thoughts out there.
Cheers.

Re: I promise its the last one
Hi Squizz, you are on the right track to reach the design of your pic (which is very creative)
I understand that you can decide later about the first branch etc...but I think it is too thick in proportion to the trunk, and after reading saibonsai's comment, I tend to agree...
It would be awesome if the trunk base was a tiny bit thicker, but it is still lovely all the same!
I think you have done a great job and look forward to the development.
Once again, well done
Cheers, Dario.

The wire scaring was obviously used as a technique by Ray when developing this stock and I was wondering if you will create a twisting shari following the wire line in the future, or will you leave it how it is?saibonsai wrote:hi mate,

What great material!!!! We don't get enough time put into developing great material these days. It is a pity.
Good luck with what may become a fantastic tree!

Thanks Dario and Andrew,
I hadnt thought about the scaring becoming a shari. I like the idea though.
Lets see how it recovers first.

Spring candles are forming on this tree and I feel this is going to be one of my best pines. As always open for the hardest critique you can dish out.

Love what your doing with this tree Squizz ;and as has been said by others it should make a very good pine in years to come ... I would be inclined to leave the lower branch

Re: I promise its the last one
Thank you for the kind words Barry,
I think the lowest branch that was in question has been removed anyway. My first branch as it stand in this photo is now a back branch. Not sure of its suitability yet.
Cheers

There are many ways to do things, but only one "best" way.
