Juniper - 9 years in a pot (progression in the last 20mths)

Post by mwkoi »

Hi All
I last showed a picture of this Juniper in October 2010. After studying the tree in detail in late 2010, I found that I was not happy with the lack of structure in the branches and foliage and that something had to be done to correct it.

Oct 2010:

The foliage seemed too much like a bush and lacked definition. I have always been an advocate of pruning and not pinching junipers, but due to laziness and lack of time in recent years, I pruned much less and pinched too much. This resulted in coarse foliage at the ends of the branches and a shape that was too bushy and without any internal structure. This was especially true in the middle section of the tree which was getting weaker and weaker. This area needed to fill out and get stronger.
So I decided in the spring of 2010, shortly after I had posted the first images of the tree in Ausbonsai, to let the tree recover its strength, especially in the middle section. But first, I had to prune the tree quite severely, especially in the interior, to remove all the weak foliage and dying branches to let in lots of light to encourage back budding. This generated a lot of juvenile foliage which were left alone to mature back to adult foliage.

May 2011:

You can see in this picture of the tree taken in the autumn of 2011 that the tree’s structure was considerably improved in the past 7 months. I have also allowed a sacrifice branch to grow in the middle to strengthen that section of the tree. I made sure that the tree was never pinched with fingers, but pruned with scissors only. Lots of growing tips were encouraged and the tree was fed once a week during the growing season. The tree rewarded me by converting all juvenile foliage back to adult form within one growing season.
While the tree was recovering its strength in 2010/2011, I was looking for a new pot. I had always known that the old pot it was in was too big and that the shape did not suit that tree at all(to my taste anyway). I looked everywhere but could not find anything that I liked. Finally I found a pot from John Wang, a bonsai artist from America who apprenticed in Japan and was back there to help out during the Kokufu exhibition. The pot is a vintage oval Tokoname pot probably about 40yrs old. It had a slight patina and to my eyes, was perfect for the tree. So the pot was sent to me from Tokyo and in the spring of 2011, I repotted the juniper.

Sept 2011 after repotting:

From then on the tree was allowed to grow and lots of growing tips were encouraged. These were selectively pruned back but were always replaced with another growing tip.
The tree a few weeks ago, before wiring:

This was how the tree looked like as of yesterday, after wiring (please pardon my choice of stand :P , I will take a proper picture of this tree one day!):

I have again left lots of growing tips on the foliage. The middle and lower parts of the tree still needs to compact so there is still work to be done yet. I feel that the tree has improved over the last 20 months and am very happy with the results so far. All comments are welcome.

i love this tree and think its one of the best junipers ive seen in this country to date. that hanging branch really attracts me , fantastic work. Id like to see it thinned out more around the canopy at some point but that is the only comment i can make other than :worship:

Hi mark, you have done a beautiful job with this tree. The final image is a real cracker!!! Personally i would have liked to see more kicks or even gentle movement in the trunk, its a bit lineal for my taste. Mat is right though possibly one of the better junis in this country ! :worship: :tu:

Very nice :tu2: great tree you have there also i agree with Matthew a little thinning out up the top is all i would do to hopefully push more growth into the lower branches. The tree looks very healthy as well :tu: :tu: :tu:

Lovely tree. I also feel that the volume of foliage is too much for the rather delicate trunk. Reduce the foliage volume by one third and I think you'll have a real cracker! :tu:

What a stunning, beautiful, intriguing tree.

I would love to play with that for a while.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Matthew, Olive, Andrew
Yes i do agree that the pictures show the tree's canopy to be a tad on the large side. I do like full trees, but i suspect that this may be due to slight image distortion in the photograph. It actually looks much better in real life. The canopy of the tree is placed quite forward and I think that this is further magnified when a picture is taken. I have also deliberately left plenty of growing tips in the foliage which will help in thickening the life vein in the front and also to keep the foliage healthy. These will be cut off once their bases have lignified. I believe that the tree will be much more compact in 12 months time. Anyway, these are really constructive comments that I'll definitely be taking in to help me improve the tree in the future.

Anthony, Craig
I wish the trunk had more movement too mate! Unfortunately this is all I've got. To be honest, this tree is not really that ideal to begin with anyway. I have a few other collected junipers that are structurally superior to this tree that i am currently developng, but these are a few years away yet.

Tony
Thanks for the compliment, means a lot coming from you mate.

Hi mwkoi , well what can a hacker like me say , more of this type of quality material is something that should be shown right here . Of late i have seen some exceptional material "oops" Bonsai including a lot of 2 man tree's .Pics don't do Bonsai justice unless taken in a studio setting , but i can see a fantastic Bonsai right there . I would like to see more of dog leg in that hanging branch between the lower two foliage pads to mimic the trunk and expose that base , but hey that's looking from my eyes and to a pic which is near impossible to truly see the tree . What type of Juniper is this ? . Sometimes we don't have a choice on the trunk's movement but you have captured the essences of a beautiful tree .Congrats of a fantastic effort

Cheers Alpineart

Hiyo,

The progression of this juniper is of interest to me because I have just purchased two shimpaku from Ray Nesci and wanted some information about them. :D

A very impressive tree. :worship:

Hi MwKoi,

Really nice tree! I don’t think it is too full and i think your approach that prioritises health first, style second is a good one. It is surely paying off for you with the results you are getting.

One comment (and it may not even be a good one) is relating to the pot (which i think is a great pot and match for the tree BTW.). I think the tree is potted a little too far towards the left. The tree moves left and generally trees with this movement look best if potted slightly to the right.

I have done a quick hack job in Photoshop where i may have moved it too far to the right but you get the idea.

Again, really nice tree and your hard work has definitely payed off.

Oh and i would think of getting a better display stand. I think its current one is the wrong size and colour ;)

Joe.

Magnificent tree and I agree with Jow about the positioning of the tree in the pot (which is an excellent choice BTW). Just my personal taste but I really like the the tree with more of the bleached deadwood exposed as in the photo at the top. Just :imo:

I am not sure what variety this is, probably a Juniperus X Media? This type of Juniper is quite commonly found in old gardens.

Brad
You will find that with the Shimpaku, it will be much easier to get nice foliage pads. When I first got the tree, the foliage looked something like this (from another recently collected specimen):
IMG_31491.jpg
But after letting it grow freely with lots of growing tips and only pruning selected strong shoots with scissors I got it to compact to this (before detail wiring):
25112011delux4199rs.jpg
Still not quite there yet, but it should get better with time. I actually learned this method of pruning junipers (instead of pinching) from studying the wonderful yamadori junipers of spanish artists like Luis Villa (El Tim Bonsai) and Alberto Baleato (Kingii Bonsai). They could get the sabina's foliage to compact until they almost resemble shimpakus. I think Scott has also been advocating this method of pruning junipers on this forum for quite some time now. Also, I believe that the more foliage one leaves on the tree, there will be less need for each individual needle or leaf to grow longer to supply energy to the tree as there is now more foliage to supply the same amount of energy. Therefore the tree will be more compact and the tree becomes healthier. If I recall correctly, something like this was mentioned by Ryan Neil when he was explaining how to reduce the needle length of Ponderosa pines.

Hakimoto, Jow
Agreed, the tree will be moved slightly to the right during the next repotting. I will have to deal with the roots first though, as the majority of them are on that side.
The shari on the top will be more visible when the foliage has compacted in the coming years.

Specimen
This deadwood is part of the tree, it is not added on. It was carved to achieve the image that you see today.

reckon the lowest foliage pad could be lifted a little and or moved to the right somehow- to break up the long straight area and so we can see the lower trunk --I think this would also make the tree look larger--perhaps
