Any ideas about how big of a pot to allow these to bull up in? I was thinking one gallon pot each for a couple years. Maybe a small grove planting in one large pot after that?

I have never had any bristlecone pine, but I'd use the pots that they are in for one growing season then up them to the next size pot or try planting in a colander to speed them up a bit? Pack on the fert too.

If you can't plant in the ground for trunk development,etc then use a pot that's WAY too big to simulate being in open ground. I have a Whitebark pine(albicaulis)in a 5 gallon nursery container and it's only about 4.5 inches tall and SLOOOOOOOW growing. I want to encourage it as much as I can which includes regular fertilizings during growing months.

From what I've been told, the growth is similar to huon pines i.e. very slow. I put my huon pine bonsai in a very, very, very large pot, as this produces better results than in a traditional bonsai pot.
By the way.... if that sig pic of yours is you, that is a cute photo. My wife gets jealous of the amount of time I spend with my chihuahua, but even though she loves our little dog too, she still gets jealous, haha.

But to answer your question, definitely put them into large containers, but be careful not to over water when they are in largish containers, as the roots aren't soaking up all the water like a normal size-appropriate bonsai-to-pot ratio would.

I have always wanted to bonsai this species too, so good luck with them. They are similiar type of tree to the bristlecone pine in longevity and toughness.

Thanks for the info, and yep its me n the mut in that profile pic' my wife also gets jealous of the dog but I say the dog never complains and is always happy to see me... Lol

Can I ask what a good soil mix would be for this species? Specific mix recipes or products would be very much appreciated!
