my first tree

hi everyone,
i have been admiring everyones trees for a while now and thought i would show you a pic of my first baby. Please feel free to let me know what you think i would appreciate any feedback good or bad so I can learn.
The story this tree is telling me is that it was happily growing on a hillside when a storm came along one night and it was struck by lightning with the lower jin being a branch that was touching the earth creating a grounding spot after which the branch died.

PS. I know more pics from sides and back would have been good but the camera died on me.

I think that you have done an exceptionally good job. All I would suggest is that you bring the apex over to the left to be more over the base of the trunk and maybe get rid of the jin at the top. It kinda looks overkill on such a young tree. Otherwise

You did not by any chance begin working on this tree at bonsai northside at the end of 2011

If so I may have done a juniper under Tess's tuition with you... I remember seeing one of the finished trees looking just like that. If not...disregard what I just said.

The tree looks nice and I think it will have quite a nice shape to it when it thickens out a little...

I will take another look at it

it's good to get another perspective. My thinking with the top deadwood was that the tree would grow into it as I develop it further this was its first major styling and it has been pruned hard but it is definitely something for me to consider. Thanks for the feedback it has helped me step back from the tree and see another perspective.

I have only been doing bonsai for about 6 months. I did however do my beginner course with Tess at Northside and purchased the stock tree from her.

Its only an opinion, but I'd completely cut just above the 3rd main branch on the right and use the 3rd main branch as the new leader. Bend the new leader closer over to the left, and you will be on the right start. Otherwise, you will have a tall lanky odd looking first starter. I'd cut the 1st and 2nd branch way back to promote the foliage close to the trunk, and go from there. Just

Nice effort Mia. Enjoy it and learn from it.

my suggestion is to have a look at the branching, and make sure they all come off at a similar angle. The ones on the right look differnet to me and the lower left one looks like it come down further.
