first attempt at a formal upright--as the pads develop I may have to reduce the total foliage volume by jinning a couple of branches to add character and open up the trunk--all ideas and comments welcome

Nice effort
Looks quite similar to a Trident Maple I have in the same style, I would not necessarily remove any branching. Looks nice as a it is and i wodu keep the pads sparser with foliage and keep more of them.

time will give a better indications tho.
