Just found out about insurance on bonsai?

While checking with GIO, they did say they insure to $1000 garden plants etc. And suggested that if a bonsai was stolen, I could be covered. Non of mine are worth more than a $100.00 but I was thinking of those of you who have had bonsai stolen to check with your home and contents insurer. They also cover damage like in a hail storm. If you have a better insurance than a general one, they do insure up to $2000.00. Interesting to know, eh?

Depending on your insurance company, you can get this upgraded to a specified amount and even specify the items, just need to be willing to pay for it in premiums

Yes that's what I put in the post that disappeared into cyber space. My insurer said my contents insurance covers garden plants, either from theft or damage. Any antique or jewellery is also protected by the contents, and there is also storm damage of course. But - if you have a specific item that is valued at more than a $1000.00 then you have to take a photo and I suspect a valuation. Anyway the best thing is to find out from one's insurance provider.

And check the clauses that cover your plants, or Bonsai. At lot of the time you will find special safeguards have to be observed, such as the plant can't be in public display area, as in sitting on a shelf in the back yard, and the like. As pup said, most of us just have to take our chances. Although as BB said, any and everything can be insured - it's just a matter of the premiums - oh yea and the excess.

They are covered in contents, that you have on your property. But Public display is for private or public access to nurseries, or bonsai suppliers. Then it would not be covered I suspect. But as Graham says and I confirm as I worked for an insurance and providence society. "We give with the large print - and take away with the small" But I gave GIO to renew my car insurance, and they checked all my other policies.

I remember while I was working for the insurance company, a large conifer was blown over in heavy rain. It uprooted the front fence too. So one of the insurance inspectors told me to claim damage from fallen tree, as the front fence wasn't covered. I did. And the sea scouts came took away the tree, and replaced the the front wall. Just for $200.00.

It is trying to explain once you have had a bonsai stolen, what the bonsai was worth. Just because you insured it for $3000, doesn't mean they will pay $3000 when it has been stolen. Insurers love to take your money, but are not so good at the other side of the coin. My long time friend who works for NRMA insurance division tells me don't bother. And damage to the bonsai, you can forget that claim too.

This is actually what I've been wondering the whole time I've followed this topic.. How to we prove the value of the damaged/stolen tree? And even if we manage to get some money out of the insurance company, it's not like we can go buy a replacement one. They're all unique..

Take a photo of it, if it is really valuable. Get a bonsai expert to put a value on it. A forty year old tree grown from seed, could be worth thousands. And take a photo of the storm damage.
Gee I only put this in from what I was told. Just confirm with your own house and contents insurance company.

I've had quotes on insuring my collection but after reviewing the terms I found the exclusions to be too much to worry about. Theft, Storm/wind, lightning, rain, sleet, snow, hail and accidental damage were not covered. With those excluded there wasn't much point!

I work for an insurance company, so I'll be very vague here. The home and contents insurance policy I sell is widely used across our group of brands. It doesn't include plants in pots, only ones in the ground. If you're looking for something specific, like cover for your Bonsai, go to an insurance broker. They'll be able to find the best policy for you.

I breed cats, and can tell you that if I sold all of my cats tomorrow, I would be able to buy myself a shiny new Gen-F Clubsport, and no insurance policy will cover them for everything I need.

Also, PDS's change, that's why a broker is the best way to go. They do the hard work for you
