[VOTE] Shohin Styling Competition 2013-2014. CREATE
The objective of the CREATE category in the AusBonsai Shohin Progressive Styling Competition was to create the best possible Shohin sized bonsai (under 250mm tall) from raw, untrained stock over a period of 18 months.
We originally had 277 entries but due to several factors, 217 entries were disqualified or withdrawn. There were several of these entries that were stunners and it was a real shame to see them out of the running.
Please find following, in alphabetical order based on the artists name, the 60 finalists in the CREATE category of the AusBonsai Shohin Progressive Styling Competition 2013-2014. The 3 highest ranking trees based on your votes will receive the following:
1st prize - Hand crafted shohin pot by Pat Kennedy of Mirkwood Forest Bonsai Pottery
2nd prize - Japanese carbon steel bud/twig shears
3rd prize - Japanese stainless steel root rake with spatula
Please select your 3 favourite trees from the poll above and submit your vote on or before 7th November 2014. The results will be shown progressively as the voting takes place and the winners will be announced here on AusBonsai.
Don't forget to also vote in the REFINE category.
Please feel free to post your comments about the entries, the competition or even suggestions for future competitions.
Regards,
Steven

Crikey. That was hard, too many to choose from
But there were 3 that stood out for me.

I Quickly got to a shortlist of 7, then opened each of them in a new tab and flicked thru.
closed each tab as I discarded them until just 3 left
Yep hard job to pick from so many

Well done guys! Some great progressions here. The thing I had to think about was what looked best now, given the starting point. I think some have great potential, and we're this vote a year or three later, my choices may change a bit. Good job boys 'n girls!

Re: [VOTE] Shohin Styling Competition 2013-2014. CREATE
I agree Andrew. There are a few that will be mind blowing if we have another refine comp. I had to vote on what I liked aesthetically and on what was produced given the stock they had started with. With that in mind i still could have picked at least 10 trees.

I know I could just post the tree myself but was thinking it would be good to have them go in a critique thread now to get some ideas back to the owners on their trees. I would put my tree straight in with a description of what has challanged me with my tree and get some ideas for possible solutions. Only with the owners permission though.

I am happy for my 3 to have a critique on them.

Great trees Just goes to show what can be achieved in a short period of time.
As an idea for another competition, what about picking a single native species of a particular size, say 8" pot and have 18 months to see what people create? Plenty to choose from, banksia integrifolia, E. sideroxylon, callistemon whatever, etc. etc.

One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Well knock me down with a feather , better still slap me around with a pick handle , {some of you buggers would probably like too} . With all the effort gone into this site from "Steven" and the "Mods" all the info available free of charge , prizes donated for comps and the majority of members can't be bothered to have a good look and tick 1-2-3 .
Even a amatuer like me can do that , I might have to go on strike , but i don't get paid enough although being a member here is priceless and so is FEEDBACK . I recon 100 votes for my pathetic effort and to come in last would be a treat , that would have to make it around 2000 plus votes for all the comp entries , bloody hell there is 6500 members here .
Come on people , if you dont get behind , involved or in front , then things like these comps may not continue to happen . Everyone on this site has had assistance of some kind , from someone , from somewhere , don't be a no-one from nowhere , or a gunna be wanna be .
Actually I want 150 votes for my efforts , even if i only participated .I know "I'm a sick puppy" just ask my lovely Wife
Steven and the crew of Mods , thanks for your efforts over the years , your all champs and to all the members "your a worthy bunch"
so make the site worthy of your presence .
Cheers . Alpineart
