Yes Ben - that is 'sunburn' or photodamage. What looks like it caused it in this case is that leaf was sitting under the other two adjacent leaves - the photosystems (where it is now burnt) adapted to shade and get very good at turning light into energy - the leaf gets moved out of the shade and brrddzzz - its kinda like putting high voltage and high amps through your toaster - kaput. One other thing that can cause it is water sitting on a leaf where leaves meet together - the water gets warm - the plant cant breath through it and you get some photodamage. So probably something similar on the fig you posted earlier. Otherwise they look pretty darn healthy to me! Ash

Thanks Ash. I took off a few of these affected leaves this afternoon and moved them all further down the garden so the sun passes a bit earlier in the day. They have been in full sun until about 4ish, maybe too much.

I don't think that will fix ur issue, because the majority of the maple is fine, so moving it to less intense sun won't matter. If what ash I saying is true, then u may have missed his point. I have a very healthy Taiwan maple which looks identical to urs' leaves, so where it is placed is perfectly fine for sun as is, and is what maples love generally. Taiwan maple is quite a hardy maple in my opinion and I wouldn't be concerned at all about what u r saying
