Regards defoliation you also have to take into account your climate. Gathering information is good but applying method to the tree is knowledge. Time of year is important, weather condition is important, as it can change an outcome. You can defoliate E.E's a couple of times a year, mid spring and mid Summer and they will respond well. But it only works if you repot them annually, miss a repot and they will sulk with defoliation. I agree that you should only defoliate a developed tree to produce ramification, but there are always exceptions. Liquid ambers for instance do not really do well with defoliation and do not reduce leaf size readily. So many variables come into play and you only really find out with experimentation. The only real given is that most conifers do not do well with defoliation.
