Propagating in General

i have been experimenting with propagating Canadian maple with a cutting about 6 inch long and just leaving 2 leaves on the end. Only,used,new growth as well and just diping in rooting gell amd hanging it in about 2 inch of distilled watter. Ill post a picture of one of them starting to root. No ideas on that sorry. I only ever strike cuttings in Sand and peat mix

I do many cuttings 1000s or more.. All kinds.
No fancy equipment.
Difficult cuttings I do under plastic packet or coke bottle. Never do figs under plastic. Keep them in the shade or they will boil on the sun. Advantage is that you dont need to water them, as long as you see perspiration on top. Probably ones or twice by the time they are rooted as long as the plastic over them is tied to the pot bellow tight. Water is recirculated.

Completly forget about Japanese white Pines from cuttings. You won't succeed .Stick to other stuff.

Although I have not managed to keep Japanese white pine alive for more than a few years at a time I have been able to strike cuttings a couple of times from pieces taken home after workshops. Although success rate is not high and occasionally zero I have struck cuttings of Japanese black, white , red and mugho pines at different times over the years. Note that Zushio is a white pine cultivar that is grown exclusively from cuttings in Japan.

Only problem im having is when i plant them they die on me.

Do you know why? Is it the planting process? Too much sun? What soil type do you use... Have you thought that while suspended in water that the cutting is using stored energy to grow the roots and then has not enough energy to survive...

I'm tipping its a plastic bottle, given the hole made for the string especially. When you're ready to take 'em out - cut the top off!

I cut the top off just below the taper. And place the cutting in and slip the top inside the bottom. The shape of the bottle allows it to hold in place. As well as hold the string. Not sure why they are not living. I'm using regular potting soil and they just wilt and die fast. I think it may be due to being given removed from the humid area like that. I shall have to try putting them in a bag in soil to maintain the humidity. They are also kept in well lit shaded areas.

I've read that most of the time roots developed in water are not suited to growing in soil. They will usually die off and be replaced with new roots if the plant has enough energy to do it. Perhaps you could keep them in the water until they *just* start to develop roots, then plant them out?

Or skip the water all together. I believe Phoenix is right. Although some plants produce roots in water that can then transfer to soil, its my understanding that most will not. Better to strike cuttings in a peat/sand or peat/perlite mix and keep humid.

when I sift my diatomite , I keep the fines < 2mm and wash the dust out then mix 50/50 with the coco fibre stuff you get at bunnings , so far i've had 100% strike rate with 3 pomegranate ,22 zelkova , 8 maples 2 bougy and 7 shimpaku juni . I know these are easy subjects but this is in adelaide with our summers . Each time i've placed the cuttings in 100mm deep pots and placed the pots in one of the mini greenhouses from bunnings. I tried one of those mini propagators and had no succes in 3 attempts they're a waste of time , before i forget i use the gel as well . Good luck it's fun to see succes when you plant them out and they grow . I've been trying some grafts now but no succes yet will need to keep at it

Zuisho is the only cultivar that I know of which is cutting grown in Japan but it is not available here yet. All the others are grafted. So I can only repeat the above.
