OMFG.. I can not believe it .. went to XXXXX in Melbourne.. Tree prices had quadrupled ..the same as pot prices..

For a Corky bark that used to be $80 is now $375 for a descent size

large posts went from $ 100 to $300

I cant believe the justification for the price increases....

Is there a good place to get very large post/stock plants at good prices now or is this the norm?

I don't think this is a great idea to openly discourage a bonsai nursery's business prices on a public forum. Fair enough I have not been to XXXXXX, but if you are astonished with the prices just ask them directly about the pricing. All you are going to get is unjustified opinions and ill informed answers to your question here. Just remember how often a bonsai nurseryman has to put work into maintaining root systems, health of trees, watering, maintenance, staff costs, insurance, then times all that effort into 365 days a year for all his/her stock, then multiply that by that many years, etc etc.

But if you aren't keen on a nurseries stock prices, its just not cricket to flame them. Perhaps go to other nurseries and if you find one or a few that you like, then instead put up a thread here about the nursery and the experience you had. Then just reiterate the great material and prices in the new nursery that you like.

Or you can come to NSW. Get a trailer, drive interstate and bring a wad of cash to Bonsai World in Jilliby on the Central Coast. You will not be disappointed. I guarantee you!

Hi grainer, as for large pots, simon of Orient bonsai has some.
As for large stock plants, depends on the varieties, bonsai art has a wide range(JBP, trident maple, juniper.........). If you are after more RAW materials which has no bonsai training but big, I'd try Conifer garden in Sasafras. I'd spend a weekend up in Monbulk, I used to buy a lot of overgrown neglected trees up there(the places I used to go have since shut down, but I am sure if you seek, you shall find)

Yep prices have gone up but according to overseas artists, we are still cheap in a lot of respects to what is available in stock overseas, although we have nothing like the aged stock available there too

Re pot prices, given the time and resources put into them I am surprised they are not more expensive actually. Our local potters do some amazing work and compete on any stage for quality and price. How the Chinese imports can be so cheap i have no idea.

The ultimate guide on price tho is to compare different vendors and these days with internet, purchasing stock from afar is not so difficult,

House prices are up, rents are up, the price of everything is going up, the dollar is down.

I'd hazard a guess and say no one is getting rich off selling bonsai in Australia, merely putting food on the table and paying their bills.

I dont know if I would agree that we dont have comparable stock. This Mel from WA and these nsw leptos are of the same quality as collected trees from the states and europe.

We have high quality native material the problem is bonsai are typically only sold to bonsai artists and not the mainstream art community. Therefore the prices are extremely low and the art cannot support a healthy income for artists or collectors...yet.

Art collectors dont blink and eye spending 10s of thousands of dollars on a painting or photography...why should bonsai be any different?? in fact when you consider the age of a quality tree and the number of hours taken by an artists over many years to create it, perhaps it has even greater value.

Whenever you think stock is expensive divide the price by the number of years. Then think about the watering, fertilizing, pruning, digging and root pruning, pest control and general labor. You will probably realise you are getting a bargain...

There's also PLENTY of free native stock out there.....
