Re: Coprosma.."Mirror Bush'.. progression time.
O.K,I have stripped this tree after its plummet to the ground and this is what i am left with
the tree looks lopsided with the loss of its apex and top branches and also the loss of the main bottom right hand branches. I thought i would continue this thread with the rebuilding of this tree and record its progress. I am searching for a name for this tree without the main, wanky obvious ones e.g phoenix, and want to run a little in house comp for a name that would suit it. I will post again after i have wired this beast.

I have always wondered if these would make good Bonsai. I have access to a ton of them.
Might have to pull a few out.
When was this tree collected, and what time of year?

My vote for name is.
Dazu Huike
Bodhi regarding care for coprosma can you enlighten me?
I've had one for many many years now and although it seems nigh on impossible to kill it hardly grows either!
Funny as I see them flourishing naturally in some of the most awkward locations but give it some care and mine struggles!
Cheers.

One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Collected a day before Christmas 2007. It was 3 metres in height and a lot of layers where taken off it.Damian79 wrote:When was this tree collected, and what time of year?
Hi Boics, they respond to lots of pruning and defoliating. I give it good care with lots of food and water. You need to open them up regularly to let the light in for back budding. Keep your eye on this post as this will give you a good guide of the trees vigour. I have taken a LOT off this tree to get a good response. Full sun is also a must.Boics wrote:Bodhi regarding care for coprosma can you enlighten me?

I have now trimmed the tree vigorously and selected a new leader (only branch left at the top of the tree) and pulled it into place. I will now wire everything into place and then see how it balances out. It has set the tree back a lot but, as with everything we do, It is creating a story that will accompany the tree into its future incarnation. I love story's.

Well, this is as good as i could do
I pruned the tree within an inch of its life and shortened the left hand branches to balance it at least a little bit. There are a lot of gaps and i guess time will eventually produce them. I have manipulated the right hand secondary's into main branches and i will let them extend and leave them as mains. It is a great test of fortitude to start again and i think another five years or so will bring it back on track.

Well done Bodhi, I have always enjoyed this tree and your fushia too!
It must be hard to be set back like this, but it is looking very nice and a few years of work will do it wonders.
Good to see you looking to the future and not dwelling on the past.
Cheers, Dario.

Yep, i have dealt with minor setbacks but not to this extent and we will see if it contributes to a better tree. Thanks for the encouragement.Dario wrote:Well done Bodhi, I have always enjoyed this tree and your fushia too!

So I presume my name Dazu Huike is the winner then?
Did you know where it actually came from? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dazu_Huike
C'mon peeps surely some others have some names for this masterful tree!
Also thanks for the advise on the Coprosma care Bodhi - I'll take this into account for my sh!tty little tree.
Last but not least I think the wiring and styling has come along just nicely.
At the rate it's growing I don't think it will be too long until this tree is well back on it's feet and holding it's own.

Re: Coprosma.."Mirror Bush'.. progression time.
So.."Dazu Huike" (a great read by the way Boics) is starting to make his way forth from the great fall that it had. The Apex is now starting to take shape, albeit that i again cracked its leader, (and hope it heals and i do not have to start again
) Branching is now starting to look convincing and i might have been spot on with my first assessment.
