Ilex serrata
Japanese winter holly. It requires a male and female plant to set good fruit.
Hopefully I can keep the birds away and see the fruit on the bare branches...
It's only a few years old.

Very nice tree Mike, is it seed grown or cutting? Do you sit it in a water tray in summer?
Cheers

Cool tree!
I love flowering and fruiting varieties.
Adds some great interest and imagination.

One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Re: Ilex serrata
Pffff.... its fake. He's cunningly hidden the super glue out of the photo.
They're just stuck on the tree with glue. That old chestnut.
And there are clear skies in the photo for Victoria.... fake

Re: Ilex serrata
Really interesting - Treeman’s is a lovely example. When I don’t know a tree I often just look into the google-verse to see examples - I found one magnificent tree at Bonsai Empire but many other pictures with Jabba trunks that don’t seem balanced (to my eye). I’ll take Mike’s slender example for inspiration. Even if the fruit is glued on!

Re: Ilex serrata
Mike - or anyone else for that matter.
Has anyone had much success propegating Ilex serrata from root cuttings?
My Japanese Holly (Ilex crenata) used to throw suckers from surface roots regularly, so I'm presuming these could be similar - although I never actually tried root cuttings.
I hope the fruits lasted for you this season Mike!
Cheers,
Pearcy.
