Oh how I want a prunus mume.

My trident burst a couple of weeks ago, I didn’t notice in time but I reported it anyway as I needed it’s pot for a more suitable tree. Proud of my efforts I put the pot back on the shelf and because it was wet my hand slipped and broke off the first branch at trunk level hopefully it’ll come back with a new bud.

I did my crepes too, which haven’t moved but needed the pot one of them was in for the trident. One of my crabapple layers burst a bud too so I also repotted it.

I’ve learned the fastest way to get your favourite trees to die is to post a picture on here my work, so I’ll put a photo up if and when they’ve properly leafed out.

You need to keep your eyes peeled for Prunus Mume, it doesn’t pop up often and really only ever when it’s in flower in late winter.

I have 4 now, one was a stick in spot at a bonsai nursery, another was a more advanced stick in spot at a different bonsai nursery, and two are 1.5+m garden trees found at one particular nursery near me. I think I paid the same for the larger stick in a bonsai nursery as I did for the 2m tall double pink at $50, and the semi double white 1.5m one was only $35. I thought I misread the price and there must be a 0 missing off the end, but no, genuinely only $35

We had a very mild winter which was followed by Spring last week (mid 20's). This week we are back to winter (down to 11 or 12). Two trident maples have opened their buds but all my other maples, tridents & Japanese are just starting to get bud swell. Hornbeams and crepes haven't started bud swell as yet.

You need to keep your eyes peeled for Prunus Mume, it doesn’t pop up often and really only ever when it’s in flower in late winter.

Yes I can’t seem to find any in Adelaide. Everyone who sells online seems to never have stock. Would you consider selling me cuttings when the time is right for cuttings? I’d definitely pay for postage and cuttings?

I’ll be trying cuttings of them this year, but from what i’ve read it’s not easy to get them to root.

One day I’ll have one but for now I have a grafted prunus x blireana and a “nectazee” dwarf grafted nectarine. The nectarine graft is particularly good and I love the flowers but I see the leaves are hideous, haha! Still looking forward to getting a few nectarines even if it’s not perfect bonsai material...

Nectarine blossoms are very nice too, plus fruit as well? Pretty good to me!

Everything i've looked up suggestes its a bit of a pain to grow mume from cutting, so i'll do airlayers in spring which seem more straightforward.

Beano, I believe 'Blireana' is a prunus mume x cerasifera hybrid so you kind of own a mume now!

A couple of years ago I dug some tiny quince, just because they were there. This year flowers for the first time on this one.

It appears you have started ballerinas and pink cascades.

The beauty of the ballerinas shadows the pink cascades though in my opinion.
In time I'll be interested to see if either are slightly hardier than the other.
I too have only just started growing both of these.

I have found that the ballerina and burgundy queens are quite tolerant of drought, much to the contrary of online information. It just might be my own microclimate though. And wet feet doesn't seem to bother them at all.
