[NATURAL] Eucalyptus ? - Watto

Interesting little 'knobbly" bits on the lower trunks. Do you think this is a feature of this particular species or something else?

Terry I have no idea what the knobbly bits are, hopefully someone with more experience will chime in and tell us. I will say though the knobby bits were there when I dug them but they do appear more prominent now.

Really? I’d say it’s normal lignotubers of Eucs.

Looks totally fine to me. It’s the same consistency of texture and colour and look of the the normal forming coat of the rest of your trees which is so typical of lignotubers.

If it was me I wouldn’t worry at all mate.

Crown gall is usually a different and more obvious texture than the rest of the unaffected area. But I’m no expert.

Thanks to Rory for the reminder, and here is my updated photo.
Neglect and a bit of wiring were the keys to last 4 or so months, but I am pleased the group has settled it quite nicely.
I was browsing around the local nursery (which is pretty good for Australian natives by the way) and spotted a Eucalyptus that looked very similar to these and it was Eucalyptus bridgesiana - apple box so until proven wrong I am going with this as the species.

Well done Watto ,a bit of nothing sure gets things happening.. I have some tube stock of Apple Box that looks very similar even the lignotubers. The main attraction for me was the beautiful Blue Green colour of the leaves and also they are pretty small . Interesting to see how they go in a small pot. Cheers John.

Just remember that these are the juvenile leaves. They may eventually change to the adult leaf form which can be significantly different.

If it is E. bridgesiana it usually keeps juvenile foliage for longer than many other Euc sp. Constant pruning can often maintain juvenile foliage indefinitely which can be an advantage.

I haven't seen adult growth even when I let it grow to 1.5m to thicken the trunk, so adult leaves are unlikely in bonsai. They grow well around here, with some nice bark. There'll be one at the APaB show at the Botanical Gardens in Canberra this weekend - I know because I'm just going to clean it up.

I do have another one that has been reasonably constantly pruned and it has maintained its quite small leaves, maybe juvenile leaves, and has been that way for a few years now.

Just a bit of an update. Nothing much has changed except for the colour of the moss. Its amazing what a little rain can do for the beauty of moss.
